My Winnipeg

toblerone3

Grrrrr
Saw My Winnipeg the other day. Really enjoyed it. A visually stunning half documentary, half drama psychogeographic portayal of the central Canadian city of Winnipeg. Its very rare that I have seen a true art film such as this which is not pretentious.

Almost unbelievable story and archive film of Winnipegians walking around the heads of horses sticking up from a frozen river who had escaped from the racetrack when it caught fire.

It is also very funny. :)

I wondered whether anybody else had seen it?

Here's a link to a trailer for the film. Didn't know much about Guy Maddin before this film. Apparently he also directed "Brand upon the Brain" and "The Saddest Music in the World"

I'd probably enjoy watching this, spent a day in Wiinepeg once, quite a nice place, introduced my American friend to Carlsberg in a British football themed pub.

Just found out that the tale of the horses was made up. :o Just shows how much the film is aptly described as "docu-fantasia"

Ooh I heard this guy being interviewed on the Film Programme on R4 the other week and this sounded amazing! I really want to see it.

That isn't actually his mother either - she's an actress. I remember that from the interview too

Just got back from seeing this.

I'm so glad to read here that the story about the horses didn't really happen -- now I'm going to be able to sleep after all without agonising over the poor things.
It was well shot but the voice over was overwhelming at times and rather distracting.

I loved the sequences seen through the train windows, and the mother (Ann Savage) was fantastic.
