i had the same thing happen to me last week - really stressful!
i had to take my 'dead' hd out of the pc, connect it up to another desktop as a slave drive & transfer the files back to another drive, but i lost my windows xp product key! aaaarrrrgggh! BUT:
if u need a new windows xp key phone microsoft tech support:
08706010100 (9am-6pm)
they're really helpful - just explain the situation to them (make sure you have a windows xp disc to hand) and they should give you a new key.
