my toilet is broken

Yup moomos thread & one not lobg before.

See in a later post you mentioned a plastic valve - they have a screw-plunger thingy at the valve end. Turn that in or out to set the cut-of point for the valve when filling - I'll lay money on this being worn if the ball ain't leaking.

Plastic is the cheaper to replace - my last one was less than a fiver.

fix them HOW though?

take the internal workings out (they usually screw out) and take them to teh hardware store and ask the guy you need new parts like these (this is where you open the bag)

take new parts home and install them or have someone else do it

when you say ball is leaking ( :D oh dear :o ) i assume you mean the ball float is letting water inside thus buggering up the balance and stuff?

Too stoned to relay by post instructions for fixing leaky ballcock.. Switch off the mains water supply... unless you need water.. then switch it on for as long as... till tomorrow.. Then get a plumber type person that can...

My gas boiler died halfway through running a bath... fffffffffff..

added...
remember the central heating if installed needs to go off as well if water is off.. etc

There is quite frankly NO WAY i will call a plumber :D

if i cant fix it ill just call the landlord and have them fix it, which might seem silyl but i am sure if i ask themt o fix it it'll mean a days leave off work and i want to avoid that

The more modern ones have a variety of different float operated valves (ballcocks).

Can you post a picture of the inside of the cistern....if not the make (Ideal Standard, Twyford, etc) might help?

Yup a leaking ball hangs lower in the water, so the valve won't close properly & the water keeps on rushing in.

A worn valve needs more force to shut so you adjust the pivot to let the ball float higher.

Unless your hardware shop is a survivor from the 1950s, they will not sell components other than balls or maybe arms - a new assembly is just as cheap.

True you do get funny cocks but IME they are rare. Most are a standard metal or plastic type. Either way, the funnies - flapper/torbek etc are just about as easy to swap.

heh hmm proper camera is out of batteries so not sure what to do about a pic.

all seems quiet on the toilet front :hmm: but that might be because im listening to music

not to worry eh

On a pda image viewer - its not that clear.

Besides, cows, sheep & deer are pretty normal here. Gives the tourists a start sometimes!

Well that looks like a modern flush valve rather than the old fashioned syphon, so it will have an internal overflow, nothing being damaged apart from the waste of water.

The float valve looks pretty standard from the look of the arm, but you missed out actual valve part from the photo I'm afraid.

I would say the diaphram washer inside needs replacing, like others have said you might be able to get away with adjusting the screw (if you look where the arm meets the valve you should find the screw).

i fiddled with the washer! and the screw that just makes it more noisy and doesn't seem to help the problem

lol just tightened the screw.....its not leaking into the bowlnow which is great. shame the istern isnt filling up! :D

slacken the screw a touch again til water starts coming in....then hopefully it'll stop filling at some point too. If that happens it's fixed (for now anyway).

OK, I can now see a nice pic of the flush valve, which is probably not the source of your problem.

What I can see of the inlet valve - Ball & arm, looks like a bog standard plastic mechanism. Get one tomorrow. :)

It is most likely, as Moomoo said, the washer that is failing. This is very easy to repair.

Turn off the water at the mains. Flush the toilet so you are not working up to your elbows in water. Unscrew the arm of the ballcock, remove old washer, insert new washer, re-assemble everything. Turn on the water, watch and wait. It shouldn't be any more difficult than that. However, there are different sizes of washer so make sure you get the right one!

Good luck!
