my phone is dying

my sony ericsson is dying a slow and painful death, so i'm getting a new phone.
However, the range available at the minute is conmpletely shit. Far too many phones trying to be ipods, and i don't need that, as i have an ipod.

The closest i've come to a decision is the nokia n95, it's got a good camera with a carl zeiss lens, high(er than most) quality video, wi-fi, easily expandable memory, good media player and controls, and it's easy to use other apps on. Great.
However, it looks complete arse.

So, can anyone suggest anything else that's any good, or anything coming out soon that might be worth waiting for. Seriously, the only problem with the nokia is how ugly it is. Most important features are good camera and video capture, and being able to use 3rd party apps.

if you can wait a few months the new Sony Ericcson K850i comes outs.

i think it looks veyr ncie and also has a carl zeiss lens 5MP camera in it. how ever it doesnt have wifi built into it but from sony it will have a decent media play in it, has easily expandable memory and seems to meet alot of your requirements, and in my opinuion it doenst look like arse :D

ETA: looking over the website doesnt seem to have a carl zeiss lens, dont know why i thought it did :s still looks nice though

i actually find n95 not that bad looking.
it's too bulky to carry around though.

definitely another SE.
go for the cybershot series as music function is not your priority.
yea, the one Jim2K5 posted is gonna be way SWEET.

want!

I'll be back in merrie england soon, and will probably have to buy one in order to be a fully functioning member of society. How much do these so-called 'phones' cost nowadays then? The only gadget thing I'd like is a basic picture-taking device.

why not get your current phone unlocked then get a sim here? Save you the cost of another handset. (It's what I do when I used to go to US a lot, and now I live in Portugal I have Portuguese, Spainish and UK sims, just swap them as I need)

Incredibly, it costs around $2000 to get a mobile phone here in Burma. Not the handset I mean, but the contract with the government-controlled communications company. Mental. There's no way around it (unless you're in the border region and can use a neighbouring country's satellite thing)

So, no phone til I return.

If camera really matters, you pretty much have to stick with SE. In my experience, they have far and away the best cameras in their phones.

Of course I think the rest of the phone is crap, but there seem to be enough people who disagree with me out there...

What exactly is crap about the phone?

It makes calls easily, it sends text easily , takes very decent pictures and has a nice bright screen? What more do you want from it?

I wasn't looking to turn this into a debate over SE's phones, but since you asked...

I've used a K600 and a K810. Compared with other phones of various brands, I found the menus slow to respond, the quick menu navigation (not the regular stuff - any moron can figure that out) a bit obtuse, the call handling less than stellar, and in the case of the 810 the damned thing crashed on me.

They both took really nice pictures (for a phone), I have to admit. And they were way better than any Motorola I've ever touched. I just feel there are better phones, and I have a personal vendetta against Sony as a company. :)

the qualioty of the camera doesnt really matter. i just want a cheap-ish phone that's got a camera. 100 squids max, if poss.

Depends on your needs, really. There's any number of bare-bones phones that still have cameras.

One current phone I can recommend, as we're giving them out in the office right now, is the Nokia 6300. It's been a few years since Nokia's made a *good* mid-range phone (6230i, IMO) but they've made up for it with this thing. Slim as a Razr, big screen with a decent resolution, all the features a "business" phone needs (will sync with Outlook, etc, but it's NOT a Blackberry so don't expect to do your email on it) and it doesn't look stupid like most of the past few years' of Nokias... It can run £100-120, depending on where you look for a PAYG. It comes free with a lot of contracts. The MP3 player on it is ace as well. Bought a 2GB card for it and ditched my old standalone MP3 player. It's just my work phone, but I'm really liking it. It's the nicest non-3G phone (it's a 2.5G Series 40 with all the kinks worked out) I've used in a while.

Has a 2MP camera, but it's fairly rubbish as is standard for Nokia. So far my only complaint. I'm still in shock that it takes a standard USB connecter and will attach as a removable disk. Standards aren't usually their strong suit.
