My Neighbour Totoro

No, seriously, compared to Naussica, Mononoke or something like Spirited Away, this film is like Chinese water torture in a day glo painted room for me. I love the nekobus/catbus and I like the way Totoro looks but I find the film itself suffocatingly twee.

it does have much more of an appeal to children in that it calls to the belife that there could be magical places in your garden

it also embodies a certian japanese nostalgia for the simple life

suffocatingly twee.

You see, I am generally afflicted with lashings of The Cynical, but for me it manages to be simple, sweet and utterly charming without ever straying into the twee-zone.

It perfectly captures the behavior, mannerisms and innocence of two young girls and evokes powerful memories of childhood in me (despite the fact that I have never actually been a 4 year old Japanese girl.)

i found a lot of this stuff echos a past people never had, a golden age of small town living and innocent fun see also kiki's delivery service and well just about all of the others

i gre up in brixton in the 80's watching telly all the time because last time i played with other kids the poured hair remover over me... so i don't get the childhood memories bit even if i'm named like a 4 year old japanese girl

however i apreciate the feeling it gives off

it's not my favorite miyazaki or ghbli film though

miyazaki would be the lupin movie and i think for ghibli either spirited away or the yamadas

That's really shit :( kids can be cruel.

^^^ correct...:(

On a happier note I have just bought Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro for my BFs 8 (soon to be 9) sons birthday. I'm hoping it will be magical for him. We watch a lot of varied films together and I'm excited about giving him these....:)

It’s on rerelease at the moment.

Might go at the weekend, I’m not sure am feeling up to my original plans.
