My MacBook broke last night!

If it's any compensation I know plenty of folks with recent macbooks, none of whom have suffered any problems. So that's officially proof that yours will be fine too, honest guv.

And you did know that Techno looks like this don't you:

I feel like I'm treating it with super kid-gloves at the moment... 3 times over is quite a lot - 4 just takes the piss really. How much were you charged outside of warranty to get it fixed?

I should have mentioned that I have never had to pay for this repair. They seem to recognise it as a common problem at the Regent Street Apple Store. Never any bother.

I have the hands of a small child :(

Well, I hope it does last with this new plastic - and that my flickering display issues don't come back. Those are mighty big hands! :D

That's good going then - certainly a recognised problem... when I took it in on Saturday and the "Genius" asked me what the problem was, I said the case had cracked - first thing she said was "Palm rest, right?" - I hadn't even opened the MacBook to show her yet :hmm:

Haha! Sounds like she needs some training - never imply a fault is common! :D

Rumours are that the next lot will be aluminium. I live in hope.

I think they're more than rumours - plastic is out. The line between the Macbook and Macbook Pro is getting more tenuous - I guess not having a dedicated GFX and slightly crapper board and bus speed.

Bring back the 12" formfactor I say. I love my PowerBook 12", something really cute about it.

I just checked this out, and it has the same formfactor as the IBM x31 that this forum's excited about right now :)

*has a _casual_ glance at ebay*

11" and 13" what?

I liked the PB12" as well - nice form, albeit a little slow, but I'll doff my hat where it's due. The Air's a more than capable replacement - it's a really impressive machine in the flesh,

They used to retain their value really well. Even with the Air out you may struggle to get a bargain.

Robust little machines too. No matchsticks in cracks or anything

Great little machines and handy for traveling. Can't survive two meter falls onto concrete, though. :(

They seem to go for 280-350 depending on the spec. A 1.5GHz G4 with 1.25GB isn't to be sneezed at in the grand scheme of things, no?

That's really not bad at all - when I looked about 6 months ago they were around the £500 mark.

1.5Gig would be pretty decent all in all. Hell, my 400mhz machine's prety good for everything other than full screen video

One warning though - how available are replacement batteries?

They outnumber the actual notebooks by about 15:1 on ebay. Loads of the fuckers.

I don't actually need a laptop, it's just window shopping. Honest.

There's a few peeps on ebay who sell them - usually souped up with big 160GB hard drives. I got a quote from one of them to put a hard drive and superdrive in mine - was £170 parts and £118 labour - so £288. Mines only the 1Ghz so I'd be stuck with the slow chip.

So for that money I might as well sell mine and pick up one of the 1.5Ghz with 160GB HD and the Superdrive for about £500. Dunno though - I like my actually machine, I've kept it in really good condition.

One of the chip upgrade companies in the US used to do a 1.67Ghz chip for the PB12"

I haven't read the rest of the thread, as it's likely gonna be some kind of rant about how good Palm and Dell are, but to the OP - that fault is common, and I think Apple customarily replaces the top if you ask 'em to. They offered to do so with mine, though I haven't bothered yet, as it doesn't impact functionality. I think it's related to the heat from the Airport card, which is under the right hand side, those two screws on the left front side are the wifi aerials. This fault also affects the left hand side of the case, just above the hard drive, (heat again I suspect). I think this got resolved in a later product upgrade, though.
Righty-ho - call Apple support and tell 'em to fix it.

Yea, with the newer Macbooks they have probably jiggled the guts about a bit. I’ve had three different types of plastic on mine and all of them have cracked.

Loads of the Os9 and up Mac stuff is shite build, the £2k Powerbook with the titanium shells were the worst, cracking within weeks, snapped hinges etc.

Trouble is they beta test on customers. Usually by v3 it works OK.

Cant fault them when they work though!
