My first Guardian shot- taking risks

I'm pulling your leg as well. I accused stan and zenie of being talentless earlier without any basis apart from being antagonistic and drole. I was expecting some kind of banter back. Caught me off guard with that. Sorry firks.

I give in. I'm going to listen to some Sinead O'Connor & drink some cheap wine. Maybe degrade myself later somehow.

I wonder though if all photgraphy and indeed even paintings are about capturing / recreating what already exists. Everything we are sourrounded by, including animals & the industrial / natural landscape is a work of art created by someone else - the artist/photgrapher simply captures it.

That's why the question is so interesting ;)

It's very easy to get pretentious, art is everywhere and we are all capable of producing meaningful works of art.

There's a line between being able to take a good photograph and 'art' IMO ;)

Depends on why the photograph was taken. Purely for a documentive reason, e.g. photojournalism or for fine art. There's photos taken in a documentive way that have qualities of being art photography. I always liked what that fella said, forgot his name, something along the lines of, "art is very often a get out clause for the inadequate." :D

when a picture transcends into being high art is usually as a result of other things defining what art is, not just the image itself although clearly that has an important part to play.

incidentally most photography that has been classified as high art has been done restrospectively once art historians/theorists have a had a chance to look back at what was going on in the period. few photographers ever put a manifesto together prescribing the theory first. all the guys who did the work for the FSA didn't set out to create 'art'. they were instructed to document what was going on. it's only now that that period of work is defined as social-realist photography.

ultimately others define your work as being artistic or not.

Well done Nina! It's a nice shot, not nearly as good as many I've seen of yours (mainly in the monthly photo comps) and grumpy Stan does have a point, but the composition is original.

It is a tricky balance to constructively criticize, especially online when you've only got these silly things :D :( to try to add actual emotion between the words. I'm always really happy that the "submit a photo to the critics" thread keeps living on as we all need real criticism to help us improve, or at least hear how others see differently what we see...

I quite like the approach that Stanley proposed when I put some of my pictures up on the criticism thread. Pairing up comparable photos and each criticising each others. I found that much more useful due to the way the dialogue sort of levels the playing field and uncovers the criteria being used.

well Nina, over the last few months I have to say I have been inspired by both your photography and the words you have given me regarding my own photos and life in general. I am very proud of you for the progress you have made and I think you truly do have great natural talent and a winderful eye for interesting and unusual composistion. I really think that you have developed a very unique style of your own that makes your photos stand out. I wish you all the best and you know I think you would be making the right choice.
