My Dog Killed A Squirrel!

Do you still see reds?

Last time I was up the little grey fuckers were in Northumberland - that was the last area of reds in the country I think, they'd been in Scotland for ages.

Yeah, got some in the garden. Saw them today.

I didn't think squirrels were on the banned list, still, they are good for the air rifle.

Greys are on the vermin list, IIRC.

My patterdale goes for anything small and furry too, it's he only time he 'goes deaf'. He'll go mental if he scents a rabbit down a burrow and can't get to it, squealing like he's amost in pain. Its quite embarrasing when other people come down a track and I'm trying to extract a baying, squealing terrier from a hole by his tail.

It's alays been 'in him' though, he dug a mouse out and almost managed to eat it when I'd only had him for a few weeks - he couldnt have been more than 12 weeks.

I'm not that bothered really as I intend to use him for a spot of ratting every now and then, and being able to 'scent' rodents is quite useful if you know people who think they might have a resident rat/mouse and want it confirming.

He's really quite chilled and affable most of the time though, frendly to children and indifferent to them tugging his ears, pulling his tail/generally prodding him. It goes to show you can have a working dog who sleeps in the house and is gentle with children etc.

He's just started humping though :o

:o

Mine is a working dog, well was meant to be until I had to work away, she stays indoors, is excellent with people and very obiedient. She is very good on rabbit, but maybe a liitle hard mouthed though. I won't put her on rats though, she would end up hurt, them critters bite back.

What breed of dog is she?

I've never met a terrier who didnt appear to relish killing rats, the occasional bite or no.

I always keep a bottle of TCP handy although I've never had a dog, with whom any altercation with rats was anything other than one-sided.

Whippet x grey x bitsa (bitsa= bits of this, bits of that) :D

She would love to get at the rats, but I don't want the hassle of the wife when I take her baby home full of bites on the nozzle.

we have staffies & staffies are terriers - and terriers are renowned for keeping vermin at bay.

we only had our 1st dog about 2 weeks & she pounced on a rat in the local park & killed it...we were so proud! she absolutely loves to chase squirrels but over the past 4 years has never managed to catch one - they're far too fast for her. but squirrels are also vermin (to her little mind in any case) so it's only natural. if humans didn't exist to control dogs they'd be killing alot more than squirrels so i wouldnt worry about it too much if I were you....they are animals after all
