My computer's dead and I'm at work

Well I put Windows 2000 disk in and get the following message:

INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing

Set up cannot continue. Press any key to exit

Friend says the disc worked when he tried it, so either the disc has got damaged, the disk drive is fucked or there's something else wrong :(

Minnie, i'm about to head out to a baseball game, but if you want help doing the Ubuntu boot disc thing i mentioned earlier, i'd be happy to talk you through it, if you can get access to another computer to download and burn the Ubuntu disc image.

I'll be home by about 6.00pm US Pacific time (2am UK time), and will be home all day tomorrow. Just post here if you want help.

Other than that, though, there's not much i can suggest except to take it into a shop and get it looked at, or wait for someone who knows more than i do about Windows error messages.

stop bein' a ninny Minnie & let Garf into yr Life. :D

But Garf hasn't said what to do if disk doesn't work

waiting on another Windows 2000 disk to see if the disk drive is fucked as well and then will have to wait 'til I'm back at work to be able to contact any of you lot again about it.

Alternative is waiting 'til the end of the month/next month and going to Ireland.

Toodles 'til Tuesday

This may not be a virus at all. I've see this sort of problem many a time and it usually just means that the disk is slightly corrupt and you need to run CHKDSK on it. See if you can borrow a XP or Vista CD / DVD from work, boot from it, and go to a command prompt (also called the Recovery Console), then run CHKDSK c: /f then try and boot normally afterwards.

I have Windows 2000. I can't even get in in safe mode so how can I run chkdsk?

I've delayed visit to Ireland for a couple of weeks Garf and won't be going when I'd planned.

I was wondering if I could borrow a Windows 2000 disk to see if that would work in my machine.

The one sent over from Ireland won't

Spoke to friend last night and he agreed I should try that, but if the drive won't read the disk, will definitely have to take it over to Ireland

So, now I need a disk.

I think Quimmy mentioned she may have one.

Ooh. Hello.

Do you still need me? I've been away.

Wondered where you've been. :hmm:

Going away without informing your neighbours.

Everyone I talk to seems to have had whatever installed on their PCs when they got them.

I'm after a restore disc so I can run a chkdsk thingy
