My cat shouts at me

now i dunno if i'm overreacting

Well derv is a different person to you mate :)

You like your peace and personal space and it's annoying for that to be shattered so frequently. It's a shame your house is so open plan, otherwise you could more easily shut her in one part of it when you want to be on your own.

Not sure what to suggest tbh, other than find a cheap house with a big garden :(

i'm not finding her cute :(

she also doesnt understand that what i'm eating is MINE, for ME! its like a yo-yo, i throw her off, she comes straight back until eventually i stand up to eat it.
hey wiskers

I suggest two defences for this problem - you can feed the cat just before you start eating yourself (misdirection), also simply lock the door while you eat with the cat on the other side. Possibly both!

Indeed it's far better to simply put the cat on the other side of a locked door than try to persuade it that it doesn't want your food (which as we know is impossible, whatever you may be eating)

e2a: actual locking of the door may not be necessary, depending on the ingenuity of your cat

not many doors in the house of wiskers though :(

we dont have any downstairs doors :(

Our Dear Old Fella (RIP :() got to shouting at us in his old age. It was cos he was deaf. He couldn't hear hisself, and he couldn't hear us. "Speak up!" he was saying; "Can you hear me? I said, It's time for tea! TEA, I said!"

I don't like bad manners in animals. (or people, com to that). We've always been right strict with our dears. No begging at mealtimes, no jumping up on surfaces, no early morning wake up calls. They pretty much mind the rules, so when they don't we know there must be something amiss, like worms or children down the well.

well we know you would :D

wiskers, has she had the operation yet? dunno if she might calm down a bit after that?
That's a really good point which I forgot to mention. Has she been spayed? And how old is she? Because if she's become more vocal and more needy, she could be in heat. Female cats can go into heat as young as 4 months old, so if you haven't had her done yet, it needs to be done ASAP. If they are both not fixed and for any reason you can't get them both neutered at the same time, get her done first, as males can still produce live sperm for about a month after neutering.

Also my cats are shut out of the room when I'm eating. They are both thieving shites, and Radar has the begging eyes down to a fine art.

Get a squirty water bottle and squirt her when she is doing it. We did this once with an old washing up liquid bottle. Cat pissed me off (jumping on dinner table during dinner), so I grabbed what I thought was the same bottle and let him have both barrels of what turned out to be fairy liquid. He didn't do it again tho!

Meg won't be quiet at the moment. She sits in the middle of the living room and talks so I ask her if she wants a fuss. No. So then I pat the arm of the sofa, does she want to come up for an overview? No. Does she want me to get off my rear and give her a fuss? Nooooooooooo!, as she makes a run for the cat flap when I lean forward.

Then Flashman comes in and she comes back. He offers to rub her head so she sits up like a circus act on her hind legs and then watches as he melts and pours out Dentabits

Ruddy animals. :p :D

yeah thats how we were with our cat who when I said "bedtime" would get up and get into her cat basket in the dining room and go to sleep so we could close the doors

we were very lucky :)

My little doggy has a lovely voice and puts her head on my knee and sings to me when she wants something :)

Chim's shouting a lot in the last few days... not surprising, given we're packing up the flat around her and after tonight - the only way she's leaving the flat is in a box! And I think she senses this, which is why we're not letting her outside after tonight. She will not be best pleased, and telling her that once we move, she'll have a catflap, will not assuage her, because being a cat, she doesn't understand us.

I don't think you're over-reacting fwiw - one of mine is driving me bonkers lately. I swear she's actually 'in love' with me - I can't move without her shadowing me, if I'm in the kitchen she sits on the nearest available surface and reaches out to me, if I sit down she's straight up, rubbing herself over me, or (sounds weird I know) putting her 'arm' across me/holding onto me whilst staring at me - for hours. This can be quite cute, say, a few days now and again, but she's at it all the bloody time and it does piss me right off sometimes

tbh that would freak me out even more than being shouted at!

she doesnt love me, i dont love her, we used to have mutual respect and appreciation - but now she just shouts at me.

she's, umm, 7 months old now and has been insulted by the vets, if anything she's got louder since then but she's always been a shouty cat. thats fine, but this is getting ridiculous, if she's in she's telling me off.

i dont mind be shouted at when i've done something wrong - but just because she's bored isnt on

milton on the other hand is lovely, he sings, he warbles, he purrs and he makes little squeaking noises, when he sits on my lap he sits, he doesnt wriggle, he doesnt demand and he doesnt try to eat my cheese sandwiches.

its because she's so young that i want to get rid of this behaviour now. because i've got years of being shouted at ahead of me.

Mine makes a lot of noise too - it's something you just have to get used to - no more peaceful lie-ins ever again though. If she's really pissing me off, I just chuck her outside for a bit

There's your answer, I would have thought: isn't she just looking for appreciation, reassurance, all that stuff? Is she jealous of Milton, maybe?

She looks ever so serious and rather concerned in that photo you posted up there.

Oh yes, it is extremely irritating - I never get a minute to myself. Even when I'm having a shit, and shut her behind two doors, she sits there whining for me to come back out  *sigh*

How come you don't love her/she doesn't love you? With her only being 7 months old?

dunno. i've just always had the feeling we co-exist and thats about it.

milton on the other hand i get on very well with.

sojourner - I had a cat like that. She was stone in love. A friend called it "sticky love" and so it was. She used to swear and spit and use foul language if anyone else came near me.

She was a bitch cat from hell with everyone except for me.

And then when my Beloved entered the picture, she had to put up or shut up, and so she fell in love with my Beloved as well. She was less clingy after that, thank christ.

Ooh err

That must be so strange to have her in the house and have that sort of relationship with her....would make any irritation 10 times worse (as it is, apparently)

You've probably already done this so forgive me for suggesting obvious shit, but have you tried playing exclusively with her for a while? Balls, strings, that kinda stuff?

Ha! Thank god it's not just my freaky cat then! She also spits and swears at me other puss if she comes near me - but doesn't do it to my daughter..but I think that might have something to do with my daughter hissing at HER when she goes into her room :D

I haven't had a shouty cat so this is entirely from the top of my head with no experience and extending what story is saying a little bit

but wouldn't you be shouty and ranty if you thought someone you liked couldn't give a monkeys about you? :(

quite possibly. we have our quiet moments when she sits still and looks cute and i obligingly adore her. but this isnt like that, she doesnt want anything obvious from me when she shouts, if i pick her up she jumps off.

we do play with them although not as much as when they were small.
