My Cake tastes really really really bad. How?

This from the man who was saying yesterday "I'm the only person I know who can make a cake without a recipe". It was your hubris that did for you I'm afraid.

this. the only logical explanation is that you cursed yourself.

Sounds like the chocolate has separated into solids and fats 'cos it's got too hot. It happens to my wife all the time when she makes cakes. She's from the 'it'll probably be alright' school of baking.

Here's an example of a birthday cake she cooked for me where she baked it in the wrong size tin and then the chocolate icing split. It was entirely inedible.
The book in the background shows what it should have looked like.

Note the congealed fat on the plate edge.

I like the fact it still got candles put in it. And someone has had a slice :D

2 girls 1 cake :D

It would if there was no sugar at all... did you replace all the sugar?

This is what I'm thinking. The one thing I think I know about making cakes is don't mess with the proportions of sugar to fat to eggs to flour. You can add stuff but never take any away.

I know I know.

Oh well.

Anyway I have just put in some mini choc chip cakes so lets see if they work. This time I have done 'exactly' the same weight of everything (weighing out to the eggs).
My daughter seemed to enjoy helping me make them but inexplicably didn't like the cake mix and didn't want to lick the bowl.

Inspired (oddly) by this thread, I have just chanced some lemon and almond muffins. It's a new oven so this is it's virgin outing!! :D

Didn't work out well then? Have you got pics?

They look great but I substituted corn oil for veg oil (it said it was ok on t'internet) and they have a really odd taste. I hope this isn't a taste of things to come.

Dunno whether to try cooking a tart now or just give up. :(

Here, on the other hand, is a cake that I made for my eldest's birthday which was utterly delicious and demonstrates perfectly made chocolate icing.

Message from fen_wife while fen_boy is out of the room: it doesn't 'happen all the time when I make cakes', thanks

Maybe your cakes are always shite but she's too polite to say :( That's why she runs round with a box on her head. :hmm:

How rude. This is only her third ever cake. She had a bite of cake on her 1st birthday, sad no real problem eating the puke cake and wanted more of my latest creation tonight (but was not allowed).

I think I might send that box clip in to You have been framed.
