I realised last night when I was finding everything I'd forgotten another three of my absolute favourites. Records all stacked ready and waiting for tomorrow, can't make TOO many changes now....

Heh, about another 30 odd tunes came into my head last night when I started thinking about it :D

Looking forward to the show, will be locked

Cheers stethoscope , I had a major panic last night when my mixer packed up. In the end I had to re-cable it and give it a thump, and then it started working properly! I hope it works tomorrow

PUT a reminder up on this thread tomorrow please...I want to LISTEN! :)

Will do, but just as a reminder, I'm starting at 12 Noon and I guess might finish between 6 and 7pm :)

I must not start drinking beer at 12

how have you dealt with the problem of over playing favourite tunes Ringo? when i start makign a list tunes spring to mind, but if i listen to them i realise theyre often tunes ive heard so many times im not sure i ever need to hear them again...

That's easy, I'm playing my favourite ever tunes, BUT there are a few tunes I've heard so much I just can't bear to hear them this week so they're not my favourites any more. In my head that makes absolute sense :D

Three tunes wot I'm not playing but would have done in the past and might do in the future if I can bear to play them:
Bam Bam - Sister Nancy
Ring The Alarm - Tenor Saw
Hard Times - Pablo Gad

I've just noticed that all three are not only tunes I've got bored of hearing, but have been played to death by every reggae DJ ever. So it might be that the Venn diagram of [my all time favourites] and [the most popular records, which I also like] has a relatively small overlap.

This may indicate that I like quite marginally popular records, illustrating precisely why I am not a globally successful DJ with a string of festival bookings. That and my patent lack of mad skillz :D

So I've had a stab at putting together my all time top 100 tunes and... 100 just isn't enough. It started easy enough: the first 50 or so absolute essential tracks were no trouble to think of, and limiting it to one track by each artist made keeping the number of tracks down less of a problem (although this makes the list a lot more likely to change if I ever try it again, since my favorite tracks by favorite artists change all the time). But it got harder and harder the more I thought about what to include. There's whole genres that barley get a look in: there's only 2 rock & roll tracks and 3 funk tracks, even though I've got loads of the stuff and can listen to it all day sometimes; there's no hardcore or Chicago house or punk. It's basically ended up as a handful of tracks from some of the different genres I'm into. Still, I love every one of these tunes and since I've written the list I might as well post it:

Song of Investment Capital oversees

I put several old classics on that list (which I love, of course) and I feel a bit embarrassed including several songs in that list along side them. But Song of Investment Capital Overseas actually deserves to be up there with Honeysuckle Rose and Don't Mean a Thing and Walk on By and Family Affair and Surabaya Johnny. At least in my mad mind. It has a drive, a sense of urgency, poise, balance, power and a sense of bitter irony that really delivers emotionally.

There are two other songs which I think are criminally overlooked moments of genius on that list (not just personal favourites) and they are the Into Wonderland and Working the Midnight Shift. Both songs are mood pieces and are as simple as they are effective. But they are tucked away on (relatively weak) albums, never released as singles and never included in compilations. The world is a mad.
