music in languages other than english

Runrig sing as much in Gaelic as English.
Proberably more in the early days.

Oh gods! I'm showing my age again. :o :D

Another vote for Nusrat here - fanbloodytastic - makes my hair stand on end

Of course, Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf must also have a big mention - no fucking idea what they're singing, but by christ they can make me weep, or sweep about the kitchen waltzing on me own :D

I'd never heard a song sung entirely in Welsh until I saw the Super Furry Animals either - and that fucking rocked

suggestion for portuguese: "don't"

If you want proper Spanish music, Heroes Del Silencio are a top pick.

not heard runrig for many years... (only the brave was cool)

I am currently very into this:

the combination of German and english works really well

Bebel Gilberto simpering a few sweet nothings in Portugese with a bottle of red, steak on the plate and a candle on the table works for me.

I have quite a few Emma Kirkby cds. She sings a lot of early music which is religious and in Latin. She also sings in modern foreign languages including Italian. Her voice is so fabulous that I don't mind what language she is singing in. It is the pure sound that is so captivating.

So noone got any Sigur Ros then?
i have alot of stuff in Danish, bit in Swedish, Icelandic, Finnish, Kosmikud from Estonia and quite a few other bands not singing in English, Basque groups, Dutch, German, Israeli bands...
I think for the most part people in the UK and the US largely overlook "foreign music". Which is a great shame IMO.

She does a bit of English too of course - I once went to a concert she gave in England which involved a lot of old English songs.

Do you know the Hilliard Ensemble?

problem is, it is easy to overlook!

Those people that are passionate about music and make the effort to sniff out new and interesting stuff are likely to come across good music from all cultures and in all sorts of different languages.

The vast majority of folk that really only listen to the radio, or the charts or get their musical recommendations from the NME/Q/Rolling Stone/Whatever, won't ever hear much from foreign climes as most of it just isn't publicised or even released in the UK.

ETA - except all of those fucking shit euro deeeejaaays like Tiesto etc.

To add: I listen to very little "Foreign Language" stuff I have to confess - I do have plenty of instrumental stuff by foreign folk though.........

I like Gregorian Chants I suppose - Latin is cool.

Has anyone heard music by o rappa?

They're from brazil and the cd i've got, lado b lado a, is just magnificent music. Portuguese of course.

But a question for anyone who does know of this band, how or where can i get hold of their first album that goes by the name of the band? An argentinian lad i knew in london had this, and it was hard-hitting reggae that i just knew i had to buy. But i could never ever find even any evidence of this album, and just bought the above one instead.

Why? I really like Cesaria Evora, and also listen to stuff from Brazil (Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Rita Lee etc)

I see your Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf and I raise you a Leo Ferre.

I really should learn how to do french characters

Then there is Charles Aznavour, Serge Reggiani, Yves Montand (top shagger, he was) and, if you're starting to feel embarrased by the amount of chanson you've just name-checked on a public bulletin board you can throw in some Serge Gainsbourg to make up for it.

Though to be fair Leo Ferre makes up for most sins.

Fela Fan e tal ....

509-E, sabotage, real, marcelo d2, xis, racionais MCs, MV Bill, B'Negao .... i got brazilian hippy hoppy comin out my ass! i know you got restriction in thailandia ... let me know how i can get it to you and i will. And o rappa, o rappa .....

brazilian hiphop is class. (even if you dont unnderstand ... point taken .. but i do .. :p)

Alizee should get a mention, if only for the immortal "Moi Lolita".
Damn i was gutted when she got married and had a child (yeah like i stood a chance) but she suddenly became far less attractive.

I've got quite a bit of Arabic and Kurdish music (legacy of ex boyfriend). Some of the Kurdish music is really beautiful, even if I don't know exactly what the lyrics mean. It has a lot of classical instruments in such as violins.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.........Truly divine. It matters not to me that i cannot understand the words. It transcends all language. What he did was beyond music. He died around the same time as Diana, and the world will always be a far poorer place for his absence than it ever will be for hers.
