Mushrooms - anyone grown them?

A year on and so far nothing, though when I pulled up some buttercup plants that had taken root in the mushroom pit, I noticed some of the disturbed woodchips were white (mycelium hopefully). Maybe it needs to be a bit warmer for King Stropharia to start fruiting? I may also have layered the wood chips on too thickly? Not sure how long to wait before attempting again with sawdust spawn (which sounds like it could be more effective, but is more expensive)?
I reckon at that depth of substrate, the mycelium will take a while to colonise. If you are seeing mycelium, it's there. Don't forget to keep it moist.
If I understand correctly, the mycelium will fruit when the mycelium has reached its limits and then needs to colonise new areas, so could be a while?
Maybe try inoculation of a smaller container of substrate, eg put some in a smaller bag?

So I just dug into the mushroom pit, took out some damp woodchips with white on them and scattered a thin layer around one of my currant bushes. Will do the same for another couple of fruit trees/bushes in the garden as an experiment, including in a bit of garden which tends to be wetter to the point of often being water-logged during winter. Should be easier to keep such a thin layer damp and maybe they will start fruiting more quickly!
