The Guardian says he can be extradicted, if approved by the UK courts.

Sven hasn't done anything wrong out there, per chance?

Does the UK have an extradition treaty with Thailand? I hope so, but I doubt the good Doctor would have come here if they had.

The article says that the Uk does have one.

"He denies any wrongdoing and says the charges against him are politically motivated."

Standard answer that one hears weekly in this country.

Souljacker, i realise the tone of your words, but i do have to object about the 'good Doctor'. He is nothing to do with being a doctor, and light years away from being good. Also, he is so arrogant he would overlook the minor matter of extradition treaties. To him money buys all, and in thailand it did till he was ousted by a coup. He will be of the opinion that he can buy his way out of anything in england.

at upton park on saturday the city fans were singing "there's only one shinawatra" - which I found a bit weird.

Ignorance of the highest order.

Any of them singing that who smoke dope would have been likely to have been shot dead over in thailand in the anti-drug hunt of 2003 (i think, maybe 2004).

I reiterate, it will all end in tears within the year. He is an arch criminal, and hopefully the thai courts will have the chance to prove that, although that will require some kine of milestone historically. But recent signs of judiciary independence have been encouraging.

Just the thought of hearing that song makes me weak at the knees.

"there's only one shinawatra"

"there's only one killing corrupt monster dictator..."

I realise it doesn't quite trip off the tongue, but it would be rather more appropriate to hear some fans singing such a line.

yeah. to say it didn't sound right is a bit of an understatement.

fuck it, he even looks like a bond villain.

he's an exile and now a fugitive

"Thaksin and Pojaman became fugitives yesterday after the court ordered them to be arrested for evading judicial proceedings. The two are facing abuse-of-power charges related to a 2003 Ratchadaphisek land deal in Bangkok."

I'm pretty sure that a thai can only get a visa valid for one year, and that they can only spend a maximum of three months in one go in britain. So when does thaksin have to leave the country to renew his visa?

City are now owned by an exile-cum-fugitive.

And this article gives the background to thaksin's killing spree over suspected drug users, one of his many human rights abuses. In very clear language at the time, he urged the thai police force to simply waste away all those suspected of selling drugs. Forget the process of law, just kill them.

And now he owns city and the premiership have passed him as a fit and proper person, and city fans liken him to frank sinatra and sing his name on the terraces.

Bloody weird world we live in.

I have a nasty feeling he'll claim asylum on "persecution" grounds.

I have an even nastier feeling he'll get it as well, one law for the rich and all that fucking jazz... :(

No, he's far too arrogant to do that mate.

Personally i don't want him to ever set foot back in thailand again. He did so much damage in dividing a pretty peaceful people, and there will be terrible repeat of that if he comes back... supporters against dissenters and so on.

The thought that he could never get back to thailand will be the severest form of punishment that thaksin could face. If and when he does come back he will be very bad news for thailand indeed.

i'm sure he has powerful friends in this country.

QUOTE]
They were chanting "There's only one Frank Sinatra" - I get the impression that as long as the team are winning very few fans will question anything that Shinawatra has done in Thailand.
Of the few who were discussing it in any detail after the game at West Ham there was the feeling the money being spent is from his telecom dealings, and as such then all is well.

Any money he has spent on city is soaked in blood or tainted with corruption. And any city fans can delude themselves as much as they want, but there's no getting away from this. And if they like a bit of weed or speed, then lucky they're not thai coz they may well have been shot dead by thaksin's police force.

Personally i think all away fans should go to city's ground with giant replica spliffs with signs saying something like "gotta bullet doctor?"

although I differ on 9/11 from you, you are certainly making valid points here. Although the Premier League is awash with dodgy money--eg Abramovitch has funded Chelsea based on plundering Russia's natural resources by the Nomenklatura.

That wouldn't be hard, i often differ with myself on that topic larry!

I'm aware of some dodgy money in the premiership, but the truly distasteful thing about this thaksin man is how he ordered so many hundreds of deaths of thais, merely for suspicion of drug selling.

Furthermore, his policies and attitude towards the three southern provinces led to two massacres where about 100 people were killed from state actions. In all three situations he was quoted as saying none of the deaths mattered because they were all the wrong kind of humans, words to that effect.

In my ten years leading up to thaksin's rule there was very little unrest in those three provinces, just the odd skirmish here or there. Then this man came along and as a result of his policies and attitudes the whole place became inflamed and continues to find thais killing thais. Ironical since the man formed his party called thai rak thai - thais love thais.

His worst legacy however is the divisiveness he created amongst a reasonably peaceful people.

He is one of the highest contenders i can think of to fail the premiership's fit and proper person test. But he passed it.

However he is now a fugitive in exile, and that only hints at the kind of person he is.

I'm well aware of the passions raised by football but i find it so sickening to hear his name being sung on the city terraces. I hope away fans start to come up with some suitable songs to wipe that smug smile off the criminal's face.

He said that he now wished to focus on his family and his football interests. He owns Manchester City and travelled to Thailand with two of the British club's players.

So who did Thaksin travel to Thailand with? Whilst we don't know the precise reason why theese players went with him, we might presume it serves some sort of political or propaganda function. Are the players aware of the background to all of this?
