Multicore stage box

I'd keep the long cables, and just coil/tape the excess that isn't being used at the time. If you've coiled the cable correctly it's easy to unwind only the amount you need.
You'll just have to accept that cables coiled by me - and anyone else who happens to be still capable of vague hand/eye coordination at 430am - are never all going to be coiled 'correctly' because its just not going to happen.

Some will be coiled well, some will be slightly messy and some will be a mess with a big bow. That's just how it is in the real world.

Why? It's a skill to learn, just like anything else. I'd wager that the first few mixes you did weren't up to much, whereas now you'll be getting the hang of it, and will continue to do so. Why dismiss learning something new so easily

Or at least if you can't get stuff packed away well at derig time, take 20 mins or so when you're back at home midweek to sort them all out?

No thanks. I really, really haven't got the time.

Look, I know you're giving me good advice but sometimes things in the real world aren't always able to pan out into 'best practice.' It's a hobby for me, not a job, and although I take it seriously, it's never going to run as smooth as one of your shoes because, well there's usually just me doing it all instead of about five people.

The bottom line for me is: "is it a fucking great show for the punters?" - and so far, I'm happy to say the answer is almost always yes ;)

Crikey Bees...give the poor Ed a break!

And GAFFA tape! Jeez! I only use it as a last resort on top of cables. Rubber mats with white gaffa on the edges is my style.

Velcro straps....that`s what I use to shorten down cables. Pre made VDC cables have `em on and I have loads of off cuts that I attach onto new cables.

As for the multi I`ve had a few off of "the loudest.co.uk" and they have all been pretty good for a cheapy. Just remember to keep the thing clean if it`s a floor box as they love beer!

I taught my missus how to solder to help ease the pain of last minute jobs. She does a mean 32 ch multi breakout , all pliosiled and heat-shrunk ! Her comment was "it`s like sewing, lots of preperation and attention to detail"!

.p.

I physically don't have the time to carefully coil cables

I'll bet you a pint that I can coil a 20m cable properly faster than you can do a 10m one badly. It's practice, nothing more...

Ideally, yeah, but you can chuck a couple of rolls of tape in a bag, whereas rubber matts/cable trays are bulky and heavy...

I give up

you do it for a living, and presumably in an "i'm at work" kind of way.

the ed is running a night at which he has fun, does a lot more beyond the tech stuff, including DJing and drinking. So while he works hard at it, he's not going to be as "pro" about it as you are.

So your kinda pro-absolutism just isn't helpful

It's all fun and games until expensive equipment gets ruined by drunken punters tripping on your tangled wired and tearing an amp off the table.

That's when the bitter tears and recriminations begin.

That's when Bees gets to say "told ya".

If you can't do a job properly, don't do it at all, is what I say. :)

Though in all seriousness there are basic health and safety regulations which should be adhered to, because in truth this shit could affect the pub's music license.

I'm not sure what you're on about. Short of putting the DJs in an elevated superstar metal DJ box, decks stand just as much chance of getting knocked over because we're in a pub full of happy, dancing people. The cables are all kept tidy and away from the public, but - as I explained - it's a different matter onstage.

Because musicians keep moving things around -and with up to ten people in a band - it would be weird if you didn't get the odd tangled cable.

I do the job properly. That's why the night is doing so well and punters and bands keep coming back. But thanks for your uplifting advice.
