Mugabe thugs burn oppositions wife alive.

at least the old cunt's lost his knighthood now :)

I didn't know that knighthoods could be taken away, but I suppose this is one of those parts of the constitution that our rulers make up as they go along.

If any knighthoods are taken away by Betty, I've nothing against her taking Mugabe's away. If he wants to be 'Sir', 'Lord', 'Big Man', 'Top Killer', 'Butcher', 'King', 'Father of the Nation' or anything else, he can award himself the title. Didn't that daft old Mohammedan brute, Idi Amin, appoint himself 'King of Scotland' and various other things?

It'll make fuck all difference to the awful situation in Zimbabwe, though. Absolutely fuck all!

His honour would have been granted and revoked at the request of the Foreign Office. Most honours aren't personally requested by the Queen, even though they're all nominally awarded by her.
You would imagine that she would have been able to revoke it if she wanted.

maybe so. But that post colonial guilt would be excorcised through wholly destructive means. We cannot touch the place, we've fucked it enough already. Intervention has to come from within africa, otherwise it will hold no value with the people or the leaders

The french don't seem to have the same qualms with their old territories.

but they never really gave them that much free reign in the first place.
your independent but you can keep the franc as your currency its fairly easy to come to France and by the way we will leave a couple of battalions of the legion in case of trouble.
probably a better policy than other colonial countries corrupt authoritarian goverment yes. but not actually physcotic.

Nelson Mandela was also involved in a lot of dodgy shit before he was Santa Claus

Mandela before he was "Santa Claus" as you so nobly put it Mandela spent 27 years in prison. His guerrilla activities targeted offices/infrastructure of the state such as pass offices & magistrates courts. He never was involved in political & economic oppression of his own people.

Nelson Mandela's closing statement at his trial in 1962 said:
I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.

But as before all the above is readily available if you are bothered to do a wee bit of research.

His guerilla activities also involved having lots of people beating up on each other though, people fixing elections and intimidating opposition suporters is not exactly exclusive to Zimbabwe, but suddenly the news decide that they are evil so everyone hates them

I'm not sticking up for Mugabe, but it's just ludicrous how everyone is getting so pissed off with it all of a sudden cos it's on the news, there is a list of countries as long as your arm which treat people like shit, in fact, I can't think of any that don't

Beating up people & fixing elections.. honestly how..???
Yes before the 1994 SA elections there was a fear of civil unrest between ANC & Inkatha Zulu, but mainly due to Mandela's statesmanship the worse did not happen. If you mean Guerrilla actions before he was imprisoned include political violence & the fixing of elections, again how..?? During Apartheid the elections were whites only.

I was talking about in general

there are so many fucked up dictatorships murdering people and fixing elections

they decide to pick on Zimbabwe for a few weeks and everyone wants to inveade them....

Wonderful how military intervention by Ethiopia in Somalia has intensified fighting and led to the threat of one of the worst famines the country has seen due to aid to being able to be distributed efficiently. And the massive resurgence of piracy along the coastline, virtually eliminated by the Islamic Courts.

Military intervention is madness.

Yup. Anglo American is busy with a new plant there. Makes no difference who is in power. They'll be paying bribes to Mugabe, and if he goes, to the new government. Oh hang on, Tsvangarai wouldn't take those, would he? You know, when he calls for military intervention, he doesn't want to be installed in power by an army, he just wants what is best for his people. Or something. But it is terrible. No functioning democracy. Apart from the High Court actually overturning a police ban on an opposition rally, and ordering the immediate release of a detained opposition MP. And a number of press services being able to report opposition news conferences.

This whole fucking thing is shit and stinks to high heaven. From the crook Mugabe and his desperate cronies, to the uncritical eye toward Tsvangarai, to the propaganda machine in the West that is painting this as the most dire political crisis in recent African history. It's getting more attention than Rwanda, the Congo, or Darfur ever did.

Agreed - even by Mugabe's own standards, this is hardly the worst thing he has ever done. Bizarrely, Tsvangarai is on BBC News this morning, wearing a very jolly expression and claiming that its time for Mugabe to take a step up and become a Mandela-like figure, a world statesman.

The bit about it "not being a functioning democracy" though is a bit dubious, lets face it that country is run by a bunch of corrupt fuckwits.

OK, fair enough, but there is, and has been for a long time, a judiciary prepared to challenge Mugabe's actions, albeit that the implementation of judgments is hampered by a Mugabe-lead police force.

This still does not warrant international intervention IMO. Non-recognition of the results of the election and Mugabe's position as president is imperative, however.

Malcolm Rifkind, writing in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph, claims that South Africa could have Mugabe out of office within a month and without a shot fired.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/06/29/do2904.xml

Extract:

Mugabe depends on South Africa and other neighbouring states for all Zimbabwe's oil and petroleum imports and for half of its electricity. If these were embargoed and if all trade with Zimbabwe was halted by its neighbours, led by South Africa, Mugabe would be gone within a month.

Such a strategy would not involve the carnage of an invasion. As a purely African operation it would not invite political protest or reprisals from any other part of the world. The Chinese would be diplomatically silent and the United Nations would breathe a collective sigh of relief.

These measures should be combined with the suspension of Zimbabwe from the Africa Union and the Southern African Development Community.

If President Mbeki discovers the political will he can deliver the liberation of Zimbabwe without a shot being fired. His efforts at mediation, however well-intentioned, have utterly failed.

Would it work?

Would it work?

I somehow doubt that after presiding over a state with hyperinflation in which peoples money has basically turned to dust, lack of electricity would put Mugabe off enough for him to go without bloodshed.

So no, I don't think it would work.

Yes, he seems to be the sort who will cling to power by his fingernails.

He's only been able to stay on so far because the army, police and party thugs have remained loyal to him.

I don't know under what conditions they will decide that Mugabe has to go. In the face of a South African invasion, perhaps...

the african union

makes the EU and even the UN look good :(
expecting them to sort of mugabe is expecting turkeys to vote for christmas:(

Type in Movement for Democratic Change into Google and you get some interesting results:

I wonder what will happen to the hyperinflation - apparently the german company supplying paper to Zimbabwean mint has cut the supply so he won't be able to print more $$$.
