Will this fuck them up ? i.e. make them intolerant to the cold, and lead to a sprial of thermal misery

They have fur and a hutch with a tarp and ( wait for it ) an old duvet under the tarp

i used to do that for my bunnies

it's cold for bunnies too!

Our rabbit cages are in an unheated out-building and the bunnies do just fine here in rural Ontario (where night-time temperatures regularly dip below -20C). They should be okay as long as they're protected from draughts and their water's replenished often (they'll lick ice in a pinch, but it drops their core temperature, which isn't conducive to them gaining weight from their feed).

A hot water bottle won't hurt, but unless your equal to the task of replacing it every hour or so, it's probably best not to get them used to it.

i had to buy one of those stoneware ones, cos i was worried he would nibble through it and scald himself. I used to make it up with boiling water and wrap it in a towel, so he didn't burn himself. But it used to worry me that he'd think it was another rabbit, which would die and so get colder during the night.

That lasted about a week, before I gave up and moved him into the kitchen for the rest of the winter.

I would do that as well, if I had them.
Having tasted the deliciousness that is hare and raspberry salad, I'd be cautious of taking my bunnies anywhere too near the kitchen lest I succumb to irresistible raspberry-flavoured temptation.
