Annabels is not a nightclub like any of those you or I know.

Blunkett's friendship with a young woman - which many people assume to be sexual - should be a complete non-issue.'Let Blunkett get on with his life with the party girls at Annabel's'
[...]
Today, the tabloids and even Tatler focus on David Blunkett's night life as if an unmarried politician's dates were worthy of attention and (if only implied) censure.
[...]
This prurience will plumb new depths with A Very Social Secretary, a Channel 4 dramatisation of Blunkett's affair with Kimberly Quinn to be broadcast on Monday week. The film will include a number of explicit scenes showing the then Home Secretary being pleasured by his American lover. It's a voyeurism that makes for unease and taps not only into our hunger for sensationalism, but a streak of puritanism that resembles America's self-righteous culture, rather than Europe's live-and-let-live approach.
[...]
The new puritanism aims to discover, expose and censor those who indulge in excesses (binge-drinkers, regular coke users, addicted gamblers).
It also goes beyond this, as is clear in Blunkett's case, and aims to target those who succumb to what old-fashioned preachers would have called the weakness of the flesh. Suddenly, it's open season on those single men and women who are engaged in recreational sex or are sexually predatory (or just damn successful).
This is Roundhead thinking dragged to new depths, as edifying as stitching a red letter 'A' on sinners' clothes. For this mindset, a relationship with a woman half your age, especially when you've just disentangled yourself from a messy love affair with another one, is a serious offence, punishable with hounding by the press.
The contradiction between prudishness over a minister seeing a blonde and drunken louts on our streets, sex on the telly and provocative ads on our billboards exposes the nonsense at the heart of our puritanism. They froth at the mouth with outrage, but at the same time, the moralisers are salivating at the juicy details. Let Blunkett get on with his life with the party girls at Annabel's...

Those of us for whom it is legal to date people 20 or 30 or more years younger (where did the time go?) can take heart that David is still waggling his mighty love wand and that he is attracting a fine class of followers.
Maybe when you get to his age you will enjoy similar success with younger comrades. I sincerely hope so.

john x said:Quite right. Apart from it being none of anyone's business, what is actually wrong with any two (or more) people over the age of consent having sex?
Babs Windsor is shagging someone much younger (and a bigger age difference) but I hear no-one saying how disgusting it is.
Sex is OK. It is not a bad thing.

Crap. Utter bullshit. There are plenty of far more worthy things to attack Blunkett for than this. It's not even like with many of the Tories who were going on about family ethics while shagging around, he's having sex with someone big deal. It's a pointless distraction from the far more important issue of what he's going to do with the pensions.cemertyone said:He`s a dirty old lecherious man, who not only has no personal morality but in addition his time in office has obviously left him with some sort of Machiviallian idea that morality, ethics and political standards are some thing for other people.......
Hang on, how does this make him a "dirty old lecherious (sic) man"? This woman is old enough to make her own decisions isn't she? I'm sorry, but you're coming across as a judgemental twat here, who cares who Blunket is shagging? As long as it involves only consenting adults, it is nobody else's business.cemertyone said:He`s a dirty old lecherious man, who not only has no personal morality but in addition his time in office has obviously left him with some sort of Machiviallian idea that morality, ethics and political standards are some thing for other people.......

Argue against the policy if you don't like it, not the person. Its not like Clarke is any better, despite his (apparent?) lack of promiscuity.seanie said:He does a good line in crap excuses. Remember his "Eeeh, I were joost a poor Northern Hopme secretary led astray by them Soothern Jezebels" thang? Before you say he "doesn't preach morality" you should take into account that he's responsible for legislation that makes it imprisonable for two 14 year olds to snog. Isn't the whole point more about the lies he tells to cover up his hot love action rather than the frankly repellant details?
