MPs to pay back expenses

The whole story is a hyped up joke.

Am i really supposed to care if Douglas Hogg claimed expenses to have his moat cleaned? On what basis? does it effect me? Isnt it really more important that he has such a mansion in the first place?

This story is bringing out the really fucking stupid in people...Makes me think of the kind of people who condemn fare dodgers and seem to forget how much we were all ripped off when they privatised the rail network...

Its a fucking drop in the ocean....Its like moaning about sommebody stealing a mars bar fromm you while somebody is stealing your new car.

That fact that it's a drop in the ocean is irrelvant oh voice of the people. And you've dropped every one of your windy principles when it's come to the test haven't you mr listen to the majority :D No no you all have it wrong, you should only be concerned abnout what i decide it's correct to be concerned about.

No. I think the majority of people at the next election will be able to put all this hype in proportion.
And vote on the basis who they think have the best or least worst policies on a much wider range of issues.....You know stuff like public spending, taxation, crime, health, education, immigration,

But i bet a few public school anarchists and trots will continue to be shocked and horrified.

There's an interesting reticence accompanying the MP’s normal line of comparing their salaries to those of the ‘captains of industry’, given that their previous attempt to distract the electorate from the end of western economic dominance undermined that aspect of the dominant ideology a little bit. Maybe this is payback for biting the hand that feeds them, or maybe they are just running out of red rags to wave about. Either way it would be hilarious were it not for the political gains that will most likely accrue to the nationalist/fascist end of the political spectrum.

Very revealing of your political instincts though, the political class under sustained attack on every single level as rarelt before and you choose to shout nothing to see here, keep walking, nothing to see (and if you do tjhink there is you a public school anarchist or trots This is the lazy arrogance that is going to see labour wiped out.

Have to say i think your comments show your almost total lack of any class politics...
Its liberal bullshit to cry about douglas hoggs expenses.....Who gives a shit how he got his moat cleaning paid for? Its the fact that he has a moat in the first place that is the issue.

How does the issue of MPs expenses compare to economic chaos, massive inequality nationally and internationally....Poverty,starvation Peter Andre and Jordan splitting up.........
Its tittle tattle wank......

You really really do not get it and choose to stand above the fray belittling the concerns of people who are angry and disgusted at the rip-offs being carried out on them - you sound like the stereotypical oxfam lefty berating the w/c for having concerns of their own instead of swallowing your agenda -that you're looking at tuhyis so aplotilaly and are unabkle to see the opportunity that this offers to attack the dfact that hogg has a moat (and wider ) issues is hilariouklsy elitist, apoltical and tacticlaly myopic. All your ranting about lefties turns out to be guuilty-hypocriosy when put to the test. As short-sighted as the worst sectarian.

Question 1. Who said this: 'It is that too many of the people attracted to the Left who go on to dominate most groups are completely out of touch with the views and aspirations of the majority of the population'?

Question 2. Who said this: 'At the moment it looks like people are falling for all this nonsense as some major story....Very sad really....But i guess it once again shows the huge power of the media'?

Question 3. Who gets to decide what constitutes legitimate 'views and aspirations' and what needs tagging as 'this nonsense'?

Cheers - Louis MacNeice

Louis....
I think the story is a hyped up load of shite.....Its all preety irrelevant as far as i can see. When it comes to an election the majority of people will decide on much bigger issues....
There is a lack of faith in MPs in the UK this story contributes towards it but it is hardly a massive change.....Most people are sceptical of politicians and will remain so.

The one thing that butchers has said that is relatively sensible is , that this story should give people a wider opportunity to raise the issue of the wealth gap.....
So far it has been a massive missed opportunity because people are getting too fixated on things that really dont matter.....like i give a shit about somebody claiming films on their expenses or a bath tap or cleaning of a moat......

How on EARTH can the following POSSIBLY be 'irrelevant';
1) misuse of OUR taxes, at a time when most of us are struggling
2) the integrity, morality and geed of those WE elect
3) the further erosion of popular faith in the current 'democratic' system.
jesus aneurin christ...

So Blears is now going to pay the tax she's evaded. Big shit. Once you get convicted of tax evasion, on top of your prison term you are forced to pay the tax. Lock her up.

Middle class liberal wank.....I am begining to think your dad has bought you shares in the telegraph.

So Butch and everyone else who disagrees with you is talking "middle-class liberal wank", are they?
Surely, given your politics, your professed earnings, your status as a homeowner, and your aspirations, you're much nearer to being a "middle-class liberal" than most people on this thread, balders?
Is that why you name-call, because you feel a deep and abiding inner shame at being a mc/l? :)

Apologies if this has been asked already, but does anyone know if there's a way of searching which MP has claimed what? If I was interested in a particular MPs expenses, for example...

Ta muchly :)

Not all details have been released. That is supposed to happen in July, but might be brought forward to very soon.

I am economically middle class VP its true....Nothing to be ashamed of as far as im concerned... i am bleedin proud of it, especially when i come into contact with people who had all the advantages in life that i didnt who are pretending to be proles....Its GREAT.

I just heard on the radio that the amount MPs have paid back now exceeds :

£ 100,000

I think there is a lot more to come. After all one MP paid back or is to pay back £41,000 of a capital gain he got from switching houses about.

Maybe the internet isn't translating you well, but from where I'm sitting you come across as a right tool.

I agree with you, the amounts involved are pretty small, maybe 10-20 million wrongly claimed in expenses.

Yes some MPs are taking the piss and should be kicked out ...but the majority of MPs have made genuine claims for expenses relating to their jobs.

The July release won't include addresses, which makes the house-flipping impossible to track, which is why the Chief Thief Michael Martin got so very upset about the leak.

The summary data is out there already, I think - I'm sure I've seen the average claim by party reported. I think the Lib Dems claimed the highest average and the Tories the lowest but they're all within about £3-5 k of each other, and I'm pretty sure the overall average was over £30k. Big enough that the £3-5k difference between the parties was not noticeably large in context, anyway.

I may have dreamt this, but I'm positive I saw the graphic on the news a day or two ago. No link.

You see, that might be a worthwhile point if the House as a whole had not consistently blocked any kind of examination of what has gone on - to the point of fighting and losing a High Court action - and seen fit to ostracize MPs who worked to expose it.

There are a handful of MPs whose behaviour on the issue has been acceptable, and only a very few of them (I can think of one) sit on the front bench.
