MPs expenses - what should they get

And the public can lightthem on fire. The thieving cunts.

No. They can take care of their own provisions out of their own pocket like everybody else.

It is quite common for employees working away from home to be provided with susbsistence money or money for dinner. Yeah, I know, I've never had a job that does that either, but there are plenty of them.

Why can't they just build housing complexes specially for MPs to live in as a "second home" if they live in places in scotland or up north or whatever, together with an allowance for paying staff, and that be it?

It would cost tons to build a new complex big enough for 1000 people (MPs plus some assistants - or just 650 people if the MPs were supposed to pay for their assistants' accommodation personally) in the centre of London. And then it would get blown up. Better to use existing buildings and not have everyone in the same place.

Should i laugh or not :D

you will laugh when you hear this

in my first year i ended up going there because one of my friends from the LGBT invited me to a "progressive tories" meeting - not really being that bothered/educated about thatcher etc and excited about the prospect of free food i went

i think it is portcullis house that i went to, or it might be the other one

go ahead take the piss out of me all you want now :D

Thats a better reason to put those who live a distance away in hotels, to be honest.... just as nearly everyone else in similar circumstances has to.

edit:

You could get round that easily by just having a free canteen for MPs.

The other solution is to pass fewer laws, cutting down on living expenses considerably.

Funny how the MPs' perks run in inverse proportion to their power. When we were running an empire MPs made do with a cubbyhole or perch on a radiator: now we're barely running our own country and they have a lavish suite of offices complete with over a hundred grand of foliage.

Agreed - hotels or aparthotels (I said that before, too).

A lot of essential London work is not in the house of commons, where they do have a heavily subsidised canteen and bar already.

The Lib Dem's have been the subject of today's revelations in the Telegraph, especially Andrew George - though the fact that Chris Huhne has actually claimed for a trouser press will no doubt cause absolute glee in the offices of the Eye.

At some point during the day they could go to the Commons to eat though, and its not as if they would be unable to get there.

Clean the stable but leave a load of shit smeared on the kitchen wall.

Better than "blood on the walls" though, isn't it, in the eyes of your common-garden health inspector?

I find a modicum of manure is most effacious to the taste of Lapsang Souchong in the morning.

Don't be daft - many parts of London are an hour or more from Westminster.

It might seem a bit generous to provide free food when MPs are working away from home, but it is what lots of companies do, and it's no big deal to give them a sandwich and a penguin bar.

Burger van in a layby like the rest of us.

An hour or more without being fed!

Seriously, if that was an issue then they could just send them off with a packed lunch provided by the cafeteria.

Well, no, several hours without being fed.

Didn't you notice that packed lunches was what I suggested?

It's worth bearing in mind the catering facilities of the HOC.

In the Palace of Westminster there are 5 dining rooms, 4 cafés and 5 bars. At 1 Parliament Street, there is a self service restaurant, a café and a bar. At 7 Millbank, there is a brasserie restaurant/bar and a café. At Portcullis House, there is a food court style restaurant, a brasserie restaurant and a coffee bar.

There's also tea, coffee and snack vending machines throughout the parliamentary estate.

Also, there have to be catering facilities open throughout the time when the House or its committees are sitting (which facilities depends on what's going on).

Just thought I'd clear that up, like, as I noticed that some people were under the impression that MPs can't get anything to eat/drink if they're sitting late.

I don't see any reason why MPs should be provided with food outside (outwith!) the extensive facilities already provided to them.

I mentioned the HoC facilties before, but not the others.

I can see why people would say they should provide their own food, but, in that case, it'd be hard to justify putting them up in hotels rather than in houses with cooking and food storage facilities.

I saw that you'd mentioned a couple of them, but I wanted to expand on that to give an idea of scale.

Personally, I like the idea of serviced flats for when they're working in Westminster. But I still don't really see why they should get provided with more in the way of food than they do already.
