Your a defenite rarety.

That would be 'you are' or 'you're' NOT 'your' <irritating? who me?>

Ok, so it's better than IE. Anyone who knows Opera - is it better than Opera?

after years of using ie - i've tried out mozilla and opera in the last few months. opera has loads more options than firefox but a bit clunky and memory hungry. mozilla is way too slow. have now made firefox my default browser. wow. hope it lasts.

so you think it's better than opera, or you're just now going to test it out?

It would also have been "definite" and "rarity" :p

well, didn't want to completely undermine your confidence

(that and i didn't notice them, otherwise i would have had a chance to be REALLY snotty. curses!)

Firefox is extremely good and I've now got it as as my default browser closely followed by a light version of Opera. IE doesn't get used at all. For lots of little goodies to add on try Tools> Options> Extensions> Get New Extensions.

erm.

i've been using it all night.

it doesn't seem to do anything that REALLY rocks my world enough to change, to be honest. i mean, i like the tabs thing, the themes are ok.. but it seems rather jittery, does weird things on the boards, is DEFINITELY slower.

is it worth it? convince me..

Dub, surely anything that doesn't suck the corporate cock of Microshaft is worth a try?

I'll be trying it for sure, when my laptop arrives back from Sony.

i know what you mean, but.. i have explorer, i didn't buy it, it works.

how am i helping topple Gates by using an inferior product?

Not by much, tbh. Once you've deleted the inevitable crappy shortcuts in Favourites that M$ installs for its business partners M$ don't make a cent out of using IE (apart from the fact it may support plugins that M$ sells to developers at a fat profit).

although I haven't tried this Mozzila yet so remain to be convinced that it's crap. The ed normally knows what he's going on about tho.

I find it marginally faster than IE but if you want speed go for opera at the moment. I think the reason people are raving about it, certainly why I am, is that it's open-source freeware that works as least as well as proprietory software and in some ways has begun to out-do the corporate giants. It's still being tested and one positive thing you could do is feedback your thoughts to the developers. I like the tabs thing but for me it's the idea of having a light browser that I can personalise with small extensions, and as it becomes more popular the range of extensions, written by users, will increase to allow you a browser which functions how you want it to instead of how some corporation decides they want to guide you. The increased search facility with a search box on the toolbar is another plus for me, click on add engines, it's a lot easier than with IE.

The whole idea of Mozilla is that it's ongoing, and the future of the internet doesn't belong to micro$oft or any of the corporations, it's about open-source, accessible freeware that we can all contribute to in one way or another.

That's it ;) :)

I like Opera, but if you're asking this question you probably aren't happy with Opera, so give it a go.

Either that, or, grass is always greener and stuff. Well it aint, stick with opera, if only for M2 which is a lot better than thunderbird.

No one has to use only one, like this is a religious war or something.

I tend to use Firebird (now Firefox) for most stuff atm but use IE for stuff I find easier to do using that.

Simple, really.

no - i have the reverse reaction (a bit more like dubversion) - unless there's a good reason i can't be bothered to switch again. but then yman seems to have answered the question.

the only features people mention are ones that opera already has.

It does make it easier to read the source than just plonking it into Notepad.

But the BBC Radio Player is still a problem. There are buttons for pausing and going back and forward which don't work and they do in IE.

I got that to work by uninstalling and reinstalling realplayer (v. 10). After doing that it works just as it should! :)

Although it still doesn't work so great with media player.......

How can people rave about such a load of rubbish? I've deleted it, reinstalled the UK version instead, and still no browser - just a useless programme in my memory. I can't understand how people manage to work it.

Well, it's mysteriously started working - I can't say it's setting the world on fire :D

But it does at least work now :) I suppose it's more of a step up for an IE user than an Opera user.

I love the tab thingy (and that text to url plug in!) very usefull...i've not used IE once since downloading this!:)

ok, still enjoying this new browser - especially it's proper use of cached images, note how it is not downloading every single gif every single time - but found a couple of 'quirks' this evening.

downloads and saved pages are not given their proper names/titles - just downloaded something.zip and it was saved as download.php. likewise saved a printable version of a thread earlier and rather than naming it with thread/page title it saved it as 'showthread.php' and i had to rename it. there maybe some clever way of changing that i 'spose.

also, having been online for about 6 hours (sad, i know...) and it developed terrible redrawing problems. no other running apps had probs, plenty of available memory. out of the blue the 'quick reply' kept showing in the middle of the page, bits of desktop were showing through and when you moved the cursor around buttons would magically appear under it. closing and reloading the browser didn't fix it, in fact only ctl-alt-del did the trick. never happens with other apps unless memory completely exhausted, even then freeing up memory would fix that. shame, but i can live with it - worse things happen at sea.

Memory usage bulletin.

I've been using Firefox for a while and things were getting a bit sluggish. I checked and it was grabbing over 20Mb of memory (the next nearest process was Outlook with a little over 5Mb) So I shut it down to see if that helped. It did. When I started it again, it immediately grabbed 7Mb and quickly ticked its way back up to where it is now, hogging 21.796Mb.

I've had IE running all the time to do Google searches and so on and how much is it using? 1.336Mb.

Who was it complaining about M$ bloatware?

found a bug with downloading this afternoon. it starts downloading to the last folder you downloaded to and some stupid filename so i hit cancel. each time i tried to restart the downlaod after that firefox hung and i had to end task and reload.

also, i have a threaded downloader app (nettransport) that i like and in ie i can right-click a file and use nettransport to get it, but not with firefox.

:(

No.
I find a few tweaks is needed in Opera from the default install, but after that it's much preferable to Firefox, Mozilla or IE even with the same features/plugins applied where available.
Opera is more memory hungry, but it loads faster and supports more features I use regularily anyway. Plus doesn't need to huge range of things applied to it to make it up to a better level of usability. Firefox doesn't do sessions, Firefox has some interesting features over Opera but mostly not ones that are of much use anyway. Opera has better mouse gestures by default.

Opera currently is running two windows, with 20-30 tabs open in each of varying content. Downloads are running, 8 pages are set to different auto refresh speeds.
Running constantly for 11 days so far with almost constant use. Memory usage was 111Mb, ran a ram cleaner to flush out anything unnecessarily used by Opera, it dropped to 109Mb.

thanks for that twiggy5 - i'll stay where i am then!

this sounds interesting - could you explain (remembering I'm stupid) - is this from within Opera or is there an app you need (it sounds like a useful thing to do anyway) - if there's an app, are there any free ones?

cheers

Sessions are good because I can for example send a load of relevant links to someone without the need for them to seperately open 5, 10, 20 or whatever pages.
Makes moving research from machine to machine simpler too if I need to. Open browser, load windows setup, back where you were before.

I use Cyberlat ram cleaner. Free to use, think i was from downloads.com.
Its a seperate app, I used to find with the range of apps I use 512Mb fills up quite quickly, plus most apps aren't perfect at giving back memory, would get slowdowns after a few days. No problems anymore.

btw, following on from a question from chio

do you use the email facility in opera? is it better than Outlook (anything has got to be better, but...)

and do you know how to block sender if you do (a question from chio)?

See I think your all wrong.

I've tried them all and to this moment I like this,

http://www.avantbrowser.com/

simply because it uses the IE renderer and therefore displays *all pages correctly*, has a google enabled but non spyware search bar, has tabs, skins, mouse gestures and its really quick. Only problem I have with it is that from version 112 a bug has crept in that means you sometimes have to click links twice. Grrr. I've reported it.
