moving to south london: where to go/where to avoid

ChrisFilter said:
I honestly don't get why people would choose North London over South when they've lived in London a while. The tube, yeah, but it loses on everything else. Price, lack of greenery, small cramped streets, mainly quite boring, worse traffic on roads, more pollution.

"small cramped streets".. yes Chris! Great argument.

The streets are narrower, on the whole, from what I've seen :p

Also, can't see you disputing any of my other points!

Well, the whole post is bolloks. I just choose to focus on that bit. :)

It's a generalisation, but I tend to feel claustrophobic in North London. Even if the streets aren't narrower, they feel it.

Not like the airy South London streets. :p

Is my street small and cramped? No. Do I have a huge back garden? Yes.

Do I live 20 mins walk from Hampstead Heath? Yes.

Is it 'mainly boring'? No.

Is it better than South London. Indeed

No one else here could afford to there apart from you. :p

I have to say that I don't know about cramped streets as such.... but I have always found North London to be a little on the boring side. When I met gaijinboy he was living in a flat on the edge of Abbey Road... very nice and all... but boring... even Kilburn, which although a bit more lively, didn't quite cut the mustard. Luckily I won the North/South argument and he is now a confirmed Southerner!!! (and he has spent his entire life, up until he moved to Brixton, north of the river!) :D

How bizarre.. now let me see, what's north london got to offer.. gigs, clubs, parties, polish discos, the mighty Loaded Dog.. yes yes, all very boring. :(

Well obviously generalisations have to be made, we're talking about half of one of the biggest cities in the world :p

I love your house, loved living there, but there's nothing Kilburn that I'd do in the evenings, nor in Hampstead. The traffic is really bad in the surrounding area, was quicker ride to Covent Garden from Brixton. Also, the house is probably a good £50k more expensive than it's equivalent in an equally posh bit of South London!

One day we'll have thread on an area of London that doesn't end up being North vs South.. probably when I'm offline for a while ;)

But most of those things you can get in South London too - and variations on all of them. It's not about the clubs per se.. it's more the atmosphere - for me anyways.

I realise I'm pissing you off and other North Londoners. I'm sure that North London has as much to offer as South London.. it's just that it doesn't have as much to offer me - it's all a question of what you like, as opposed to what is best - IMHO!!! :D

Yeah, that or South London owns ;)

Oh FFS.. here am I, trying to smooth things over.. create a bit of North-South lurve........... and you barge in telling, of all things, the truth for goodness sake.. letting yourself down, letting this forum down and behaving completely out of character....

I'm afraid I no longer have the foggiest what filter's on about, I can only assume "south london owns" is some sort of "street" and/or teen-speak he's picked up.

Anyhow hey ho.

Red Jezza's finally flipped. Oh well.. :)

Only been in South a while, and only in Streatham, but it gets my vote :) Feel more comfortable and happy here than I have anywhere else in London

not actually in london though... i mean, they are the other side of croydon. That has to be zone 6...

Despite its protestations, Coulsden is in the London Borough of Croydon! :)

Caterham, however, is actually in Surrey!

I am not sure that Caterham is even in Zone 6, in fact. I looked at houses there, when I was moving to the area, but decided it was too far out (in the sense of distance from central London, not the hippy sense!) and too full of hunt supporters. Oh, and too many hills, too, even though that was before me knees went! :D

blimey, baby grumpling's been here 5 minutes and suddenly he's saaaf laahndaahn OG! :p

I live in South London, have done for 2 years. I've lived in North London, did for 3 years. Am I not entitled to an opinion on which I prefer?

Indeed, indeed, it is one of the great misfortunes of a democracy that you are entitled to an opinion.

Allow I feel it my bound duty before the Good Lord to call you on your frankly weird claims re Saarf London

May the Lord take the scales from thine eyes and those of the Jezza (though I think He may not in the latter.. :( )

But Hollis.. Wood. Green. :( That's Wood. Green. :(

You gotta be rich to live in Dulwich.

That's completely untrue. Im in West Dulwich and am definitely not rich. We moved here cos it was cheaper than Tooting, Balham, Streatham etc. Prices have gone up of course since we moved here 4 years ago but its still significantly cheaper than a lot of areas in South London. (prob due to lack of tube)

West Dulwich is a great place to live. We've got good local shops, restaurants and pubs. Loads of green spaces and tonnes of trees and things generally feel less claustrophobic than other areas in London. You can get to Victoria in 11mins and also trains going to Blackfriars. Nbr 3 bus could be improved but takes you through Brixton and Kennington into the West End.
I can really recommend living here.
