Moving to New Cross - what's good about it?

New X was pretty grim when I lived there a couple of years ago, it was close to Greenwich park was about the only good thing.

Whole area from New X to Deptford & even Brockley is being touted as a hotbed of creativity and there seems to be a healthy artistic/music subculture.

With Goldsmith's art school there you get a lot of pretentious art students but it does also mean some good nights in the pubs. Deptford isn't far at all, great market which is really cheap. Also you've got the Deptford arms with cheap beer and bands in the evenings.

There are one or two decent pubs down the New Cross Road. It's a nice enough place to go for a drink, although a lot of the pubs are quite studenty. It's in easy reach of Greenwich as well.

ooooh, which co-op? I used to live at Sanford - it's fucking insane :) good way or bad way depends on what you're looking for. (if you're at Sanford - which house????)

there's loads of good stuff going on in new X. but it's shifting all the time. lots of squats, parties, creative tings going on - check out Rubbish Fairy. Deptford market is good for cheap veg. errr, there'll be lots changed since I was there so my recommendations prob aren't that great. I've heard that the Amersham??? is the new hot venue... my personal fav pub is the Marquis of Granby. It's full of students in term time but is a generally friendly locals pub, with a pool table. I also quite fancy the bar manager, so if you see him, say hi from me ;)

SFS- you really are a glass half full kind of gal! Would YOU live in New Cross?!

Possibly, if it meant I got a place with a garden (that's the only reason I'd move at all), but possibly not. If I did end up there I'd try to be positive about it though.

You could end up saving loads of money if there's less to do there :D

My friends run a club night at the New Cross Inn called South Eats London which is cool.

Also, I had a very good night in New Cross involving a man asking if I would allow him to give me oral sex in exchange for some of his drugs.

Blackheath darling, and don't you forget it!

*sticks nose in air*

Admittedly if I had been from Plumstead, New X would probably seem like paradise :D

:D :D

A good friend of mine bought a house in Plumstead, but would swear with her last breath that she lived in Abbey Wood!

Oh and - you're spitting distance from The Den! You can go and watch Millwall on a Saturday. Lucky you. :p
LOL!
I'm even closer to the Den (it's just next to my estate:D) actually there's quite a nice little park there behind the football ground too - BridgeHouse Meadows, it's tucked out of the way so not many people have heard of it:)

its ok

telegraf hill park in the summer or hilly fields in brockley

easy connections and is on the TUBE!!!!!!!!

twatty students ( soemtimes ) but lots of pubs

Also, didnt Vic & Bob start off the the amersham - and im sure napalm death didt a bit of amersham as well

I'm about to move to New Cross to live in a lovely co-op. I'm keen on the house I'm moving into but not sold on the area yet and feel like I'll miss Brixton - so tell me all the good things there are to know about New Cross and nearby areas. 'The Venue' is not what I want to hear :D

it's 20 mins from my house.

the prince, or is it royal, albert is nice. comedy/gigs in the amersham. umm..

dunno.

There's a decent amount of nightlife in New Cross (Amersham Arms, The Royal Albert, The Bunker Club, etc), some local reviews and reader feedback here

Plus you're near Greenwich, Deptford, Blackheath and Brockley.

Great for bands and arts events these days - the whole ROcklands / Blue Light District set-up. But BA doesn't like music. Or dancing. Or anything :p
