Moving house

Re-assemble your bed as the very first job in your new house. You will be glad you did.

Further to this, some moving firms will take apart and then put back together your big bits of furniture in the new place when you move. It is a service worth paying for! When we moved a couple of years ago our movers (Aussie Man & Van) did this with our bed and sofa and it was an absolute godsend. All we had to do was sling the sheets on the bed on our 1st night :thumbs:

Do one box a day - helps it to feel less overwhelming if you’re doing little and often. Agree with others start with the stuff you want but don’t actually need out and then work backwards from there.

Ask your supermarkets if they have empty boxes they can give you for packing. Those big Sports Direct bags are brilliant for books etc too (you can get the same type of bags from Pound Stretcher etc if you’d rather not use SD. Not that Poundstretcher is much more ethical but there we go!).

Along with the kettle etc in the box you keep with you, include surface spray, bleach and some cloths. It’s nice to put things into clean cupboard shelves and to clean the bath and shower before using it.
 
If you have a need you can also get cardboard wardrobe hanging boxes. Saves on folding loads of clothes up in bags and the hanging boxes can be loaded up by the furniture shifters.
 
Yep reassemble beds as priority number one. Don't forget where you packed your bedding and sheets!

Instead of emptying out chests of drawers just take them out and wrap in cling film so things don't fall out, then reassemble in the new place.

Clothes can just be taken out of the wardrobe still on hangers and put across the back seat of your car.

Make sure your cleaning products are accessible in case the new place hasn't been cleaned. Take a box with the kettle, tea bags, milk and so on in the car.
 
Register for Freecycle. Lots of people offering empty packing boxes, wrapping paper, bubble wrap. And then you can give it all away to someone else asking for it afterwards.

I wish I’d registered for Freecycle weeks before I moved. I hate throwing out stuff that someone’s can use; I could have given away the contents of my shed on Freecycle instead of most of it ending up in a skip.

Use clothes, tea towels, linen etc. to wrap precious and fragile stuff.

Pack plants last, so they come out first and you can just put them in the garden straight away. Then you don’t need to move them around or think about them for a few days at least.
 
Before moving, we got rid of a lot of stuff. Some to friends, others to randoms, some to charity. Still had a lot to get rid of when we discovered selling it online, some on the big sites and some locally. And a couple of car boot sales. Still had a fair old bit of boxed up books and things which we had moved over here. Had to wait 2 months or so until it arrived.
 
Another vote for getting people in to do the move. Pack yourself by all means but I presume you're not moving to ground floor flat. Let some fit people used to such things to do it.

I moved from London to Glasgow two years ago. I had 3 months to find and place and move I did not have the energy or time to declutter as I was working full time consequently my move from a two bedroom to three bedroom flat did not give me more space. I had 20 years or filling the old flats neuks and crannies neatly with my stuff. It did not fit in my new flat. Thankfully there was a loft to hide shit in but now I need to do the disposal as I want to move again within a couple of years.
 
I hate moving house. Last time I moved house one of the moving men made a horrible mess of the toilet and then said he didn't feel well and went home. So I had to help the remaining removal guy to fill a lorry which he couldn't drive (from my second floor flat) while we waited for the company to send a driver. We got a cab to the new place and waited over two hours cause the movers stopped for lunch on the way. They then turned up late and had a fight about parking spaces with one of my new neighbours. And our bed wouldn't fit up the stairs. :facepalm:

Sorry, no good advice other than check your removal men aren't arseholes first.
 
I’m sorry you had a bad experience maomao .But now I’m worried the we’ll alienate the neighbours by committing a parking faux pas. Which I hadn’t thought of. :D
 
Don't get a dyson. A hoover that's allergic to dust, absolute mystery why people like them. Shithouse of a vacuum.
I’ve had a Dyson. Kept breaking down. They’d always send someone to fix it (free of charge), but it meant regularly waiting for the repair person. That’s why I got fucking Henry the cunt.

I’m considering one of the (relatively) cheaper Shark models.
 
I agree about Dysons - proper overrated shit. My OH bought ours and likes the thing...so he gets to do the hoovering!

Moving... I moved from a smallish two-bed terraced house where I lived for nearly 23 years. In that time I reckon I had around fifteen assorted housemates, sofa surfers, lodgers etc. All of whom left various belongings (plus I am quite a hoarder).

I think I literally did about fifteen trips to the tip. The weirdest thing was finding an old-fashioned suitcase under the stairs containing nothing but a purple nylon sleeping bag and an ancient tweed jacket. To this day I have no idea whose it was.
 
if you or your other inhabitants are the type who in the last day or so will bung random shit all in the same box, for the love of god label it! my husband did some very odd combinations the first time we moved together and it was a nightmare not knowing which box had some of the last minute obviously used all the time stuff in. e.g. i'd half fill a box with non-crucial stuff, label it as that, stop as it was getting heavy and needed something light in the top half, and then he would bung important stuff on top, not update label and seal it. gah! last time we moved it was much more controlled.

write labels on the top and on at least two sides. when stacking boxes on unload try and make sure a label is facing out. nothing worse than not knowing which of the four boxes on the bottom layer has the thing it that you want.

pack most of your kitchen stuff well in advance as that's often the slowest bit. leave a selection left til last, e.g. four plates, four bowls, four mugs etc. makes a bit more washing up for a short while but means you're not wrapping all the breakables in a panic on the morning of move.
 
So how did the move go? I hope it went as well as can be expected. :thumbs:

On a related note, we pick up the keys on Friday to our new house and I've got a removal van booked for Monday, as we already have plans on Saturday, so can't move at the weekend. Luckily we're renting at the moment, and don't have to be out of our place till Wednesday. We'll still probably move some stuff on Sunday ourselves as it's only about 6 miles up the road.

Still not looking forward to it, but it'll be a relief when we're in. We've had most of our stuff boxed up since August as the last house which we were meant to move into fell through, that was back in September. :mad: But this house is nicer, and cheaper, so it worked out for the best. :thumbs:

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just avoiding packing more shit. :D
