what happens to bookmarks?
my gf has pages of them .....
I use Foxmarks Bookmarks Synchroniser - the bookmarks are safely replicated on their server meaning you can install them on any machine and even use them in an internet caff.

(But I'd be very surprised if they're lost in the upgrade).

Been using this for about a week or two now, and that restore session thing is really getting irritating. I would have thought that it only asks if you'd like to restore your session if you closed in a crash or closed with more than one tab open?
Do you realize that you can change the restore settings in:

Tools > Options> Main

Under "Startup," instead of selecting "Show my windows and tabs from last time," you can select "Show my home page" or "Show a blank page"?

That way, the restore thingy will only come into play after a crash.

I installed it last night and it imported my bookmarks from 1.5 no probs
Me too.

But lobster, if you're really worried, just export your bookmarks to a bookmarks.html file before you upgrade.

Go to Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.

When the bookmarks page opens, go to File > Export, choose a place on your hard drive, and export the file.

Then, in the unlikely event you lose your bookmarks during the upgrade, you can just import that bookmarks.html file into FF2.0.

Now it's starting to really fucking piss me off.

Five minutes ago it as recording 360MB usage for just five tabs open and now the Google search box has vanished and been replaced with a fucking Yahoo one.

Google's no longer in the drop down list and I can't find a way of getting it back. Grrr!

Looks like old habits die hard.

Look at the memory Firefox v2 is hogging! (I've got 11 tabs open, none showing anything particularly heavy)
How many extensions, themes and other addons do you have installed?

Do the same in IE7 and you'll lose even more memory!

There are some nice addons for FF though:
web developer - helps no end in my line of work
cooliris preview - very nice if you want to see the page behind a link without having to actually click the link.

Now I've just got to wait for all my other stuff to be updated to work with this version!

Why does FF need all this RAM? Should only need about 1MB for the elements of a webpage, sure you'd need some extra RAM to work with but ... ?

OK: a restart sorted it. WTF is going on with the thing?!
TBH, I'm not surprised. It's a major version release, there's bound to be teething troubles.

I've had a few oddities occur already, but nothing too irksome.

Version 2.01 or 2.1 or suchlike will no doubt be released in a month or two and fix all the niggles thrown up by 2.0

That does seem like a lot.

I assume a tech-savvy guy like you is aware of the about:config setting that can help with Firefox's memory use?

browser.cache.memory.capacity

Mine is set to 65536, and i haven't yet seen my FF2.0 memory use climb above about 80Mb. And that's with 13 extensions and a whole bunch of open tabs. And the browser has been open for about 18 hours straight, which is a situation where memory usage often begins to climb.

So to sum things up, considering my internet machine is not particularly 'w0w1!' i should avoid the firefox update since it'll cripple my already limited memory?

And ed, where can i get the kitten plugin? :o :D

One of the things that FF does in its caching is store shit loads of stuff post rendered which is why it starts to chunk memory. If you have 11 tabs open then you'll have loads and loads of stuff held in there. This is what makes it such a resource hog. Its also what makes it so fast at navigation.

I find it hogs slightly less memory than IE tbh.

about:config can be really useful though - you can tweak quite a lot of handy stuff.

Mr Tech Local is a handy addon, as is Faster Fox.

You want this.

FF - the something for everyone browser :)

The problem is that every extension/theme has to be reviewed by an open source bloke (i.e volunteer) before the update can be listed on the extension site, even if the only change is to up a compatibility flag from 1.5.0.* to 2.0.0.* I waited over a month last time.

You can limit its memory usage in about:config - just set values for either browser.cache.memory.capacity, or browser.cache.disk.capacity (or both ;)). Here's a Computerworld article that describes what settings to try for different amounts of available RAM (for FF1.5), and here's a list of useful FF2 about:config settings. :)

I wouldn't worry, this usually happens and the extension creators just tend to issue a version update...
Well I've just taken the plunge and...

Firefox only had a problem with one extension, Session Manager, which I can live without for a while. All the others passed with flying colours. It even found a compatible update for my theme :)

As painless a migration as one could wish for really.

PS. The spell checker doesn't recognise "Firefox" :D

Also, what an unbelievably small download, just 5.5MB! I thought it was the just pre-installer, but nope that was it!

Yay. They seem to have anticipated a whole bunch of extension makers needing to upgrade and organisaed people to authorise the new versions.

Piece of shit is now blocking a pop up that I want to see despite:
(a) 'block pop ups' being unticked and
(b) me manually putting the domain it my 'allowed sites' list

Oh, and last night Firefox was hogging over half a gig of memory.
