motorbikes in bus lanes

I don't like how motorbikes behave in bus lanes. Since more cyclists are beginning to cycle in the primary position, more motorcyclists are taking risks and overtaking too close and occasionally even undertaking impatiently. It makes for a more nervous ride.

In London I often find them in the ASL box (think someone said they are allowed), sometimes blocking the feed lane that leads into the ASL box, which is dead annoying. If they're in the ASL box legitimately they need to be out on the right side to let people in, especially given they'll easily out-accelerate anything else when the green light comes.

Well, despite refusing to accept the idea of motorbikes in bus lanes, the local alternative transport body have decided to campaign for trucks to be allowed to use them!

That's a good idea actually. To relieve congestion even further they will probably also look at allowing cars to use the bus lanes. Either that or have more than one bus lane in each direction. If all lanes were bus lanes then all vehicles would be able to use them.

Motorbikes are not allowed in ASL boxes.

Highway Code rule 178 said:
Advanced stop lines. Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic. Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked. If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area. Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.

Bus lanes don't cause congestion, too many cars do.

Agreed. Careful to shoulder-check now when overtaking a slower bicycle in the bus lane, even if my manoeuvre won't take me outside the lane. You can easily have a motorbike doing 30mph between you and the rest of the traffic.
