Not being as a big a fan of the first one as many other people, I thought it was a perfectly acceptable sequel. It's no worse than many horror sequels, unoriginal but it does the job.

Die Hard 2 took the lazy sequel approach of being basically a remake of the original, only it was done with much less skill. Die Hard was a fantastically well constructed film, a perfect roller coaster ride where one action set piece or plot turn always topped the previous one. Die Hard 2 just went by the assumption that making everything bigger and louder is automatically better. It ended up being monotonous rather than thrilling. If big explosions is all you are after, it may well hit the spot, but it's a bad film.

Sequels to films that were flops are always a bit of a head scratcher. Pitch Black was a modestly successful monster movie, but the sequel The Chronicles of Riddick was a ponderous, ridiculous space opera which came and went to general indifference and poor box office. However someone seems convinced the world needs more Vin Diesel kicking alien arse and now there is another sequel in production.
