Most Overrated Piece of Music

Listened to "Electric Ladyland" the other day & was reminded just how good he was.

I think it's just fashionable to slate icons and "sacred cows" from yesteryear.

OK.

Neutral Milk Hotel's In An Aeroplane Over The Sea is objectively, undeniably great and only a fool would claim otherwise.

:)

Did you have a different user name once? Did you start a thread about that album? If so thats where I first heard them  I like On Avery Island too. As for over rated - Queen. Although I can see why people like them.

if you compare jimi hendrix to what was coming out at the time he was years ahead

it's the same as so much old skool harcore/jungle etc sounds really tame now but at the time it just blew everyone away

i could still stand to listen to hendrix but i'd never seek it out...

I still listen to Hendrix a fair bit although it tends to be the live stuff released after his death. I'm not a big fan of the studio albums - they dilute him a bit, for me. Band Of Gypsys / Live At The Fillmore East are my favourites - no-one's sounded like that since.

i refer you to what i believe is still a very relevant post from some years ago

Good people of Urban.

please please PLEASE could we all agree that sometimes it's possible to just not like something. To have no agenda, no stance, no point to prove, but to just not like it.

Stating a dislike for something does necessarily imply

  • you're trying to look cool
  • you're trying to look so uncool you look cool
  • that you just haven't heard / seen the right track / album / book
  • that it's reverse snobbery
  • that you're just trying to be awkward
  • that you think people who do like it are idiots
  • that you're being homophobic / racist / classist / species-ist / dogmatic
  • that you're part of a hipster mob

etc etc etc.

some people just happen to think that some things that some other people like is shit.

You'd think this wouldn't need spelling out, but there isn't a day goes by without someone invoking one of the above arguments to defend their favourite cultural sacred cow.

usually the fucking Beatles.

never mind Radiohead, can i get in early here ....just been sent a promo by a band called Fake problems, utter utter radio friendly drivel, but at least they can't be overrated (yet) cos i've never heard anyone say they like em

so not even remotely relevant to the thread then, trevor?

you're only saying that to sound clever

I don't think in this case that is true but clearly the argument could have been articulated in a more intelligent way. Saying something is *shit* isn't really enough if you wish to be taken seriously - although quoting oneself is probably a greater crime!

:D
