Most Overrated Piece of Music

I don't get why people get moist over the Jimi Hendrix version of the Star Spangled Banner. It's basically a longwinded horrible piece of fretwankery that manages to be worse than the anthem it's from - which is in itself soporifically boring.

Maybe I'm missing the point and the source of the awesomeness is that Jimi actually got away with that shit because his sets were so good. Or some bollocks about social commentary. Gash song though.

I suspect that what you're missing is what it meant to different groups of people at the time he did it. To a lot of Americans, what he did was a transgressive act, messing around with the national anthem. Some of them saw it as a good thing, a re-appropriation of an affirmation of freedom, and others took it as an insult.
As purely a piece of guitar music it's okay, but nothing special, but in the right time and place it was, if not "revolutionary", at least a kick in the arse of the "my country, right or wrong" brigade.

And it upset the Birchers. What more could you want?

Not if it is undeniably great.

It doesn't have undeniable greatness.
I deny that it is "great", therefore, its' greatness is not "undeniable".
You need to separate your own opinions (which, of course, matter a great deal to you), from the fact that the opinions of others may vary.
And you should also bear in mind that their opinions will be just as arbitrary, just as subjective, as your own.

see, I'd like to agree with you but hobgoblin's argument for the objective greatness of Pet Sounds is so damned compelling I fear we may both be wrong. I find my resolve wilting before the fire of his logic

You're trying for Owen Meany's title as "sarcasm master" again, aren't you?

Don Bradman, Reggae, Weed, black girls, Brian Jonestown Massacre etc.

Don Bradman was a cheat, Dillinger bores me, I've smoked some very sub-standard weed over the last 30 years, I went out with a psychopathic black girl back in the day, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre sucked shit through a bendy straw.

Just enjoy what music you like rather than worrying about whats overrated.

Precisely.
I freely admit that I occasionally play a Big Country album, and that I'm not bothered if that causes a few smirks on the board. I like an occasional blast of bagpipe-sounding guitar through my head and that's that, conformity to some idea of musical fashionability be fucked.

velvet underground are well overrated - i've never understood why so many bands who sound nothing like them cite them as influences.
venus in furs is great though

Jefe hit the nail on the head and I think it's especially true with him - important at the time, but nothing that great about him tbh.

The only band from that time i'd listen to out of choice are the Velvets or maybe Led Zeppelin

Aye, btw not saying it wouldn't be enjoyable to someone else, just never been into his style really.
