Most Overrated Band

Photo finish between the Velvet Underground and the Doors.

Nah. The Doors are very clearly frontrunners for the title.
but the Velvets were ace.

yeah, the chili peppers definitely.

much as I hate them I think they're more bewilderingly popular than overrated, cos everyone hates them don't they?

The Clash I like but they are getting more overrated by the year, the myth of the Clash is really getting on my nerves these days.

U2
Basement jaxx
Cold play
Oasis
Metallica
Puff Daddy/Tupac/B.I.G/ Eminem need I need to go on ............

I'd go with The Strokes, if we're talking recent years. One song, and not a very good one.

And The Doors, for all time. Very poor.

Another vote for The Beach Boys.

Radiohead
Led Zeppelin

Not that I think any of the above are shite, I just can't understand why anyone would get wildly enthusiastic about them.

There seems to be an overwhelming majority of male guitar bands on this thread; are we to read anything into this?

I'm going to go with the Arctic Monkeys.

Their cool gimmick is that they are a band that didn't know how to play their instruments when they got together.

By a small miracle their music also sounds exactly like you'd expect music from non-instrument playing band to sound like.

They are really fucking shit and they get on my tits.

Agreed, really fucking hate coldplay also.

VU ? yer so wrong it's snot even worth arguing about, they may have been inept but they sowed the seeds for so many great things.

Of recent years i'd go with Oasis, they've had their moments, made some good tunes but the over exposure is painful to be hold., :(

How? Honest question. I never heard a VU influence in any band. They're unique. But they're shit. Apart from Venus In Furs.

Can, Faust, Suicide, Television, Jesus & Mary Chain, lots of punk, lots of indie, Roxy Music / Eno, The Modern Lovers

they're widely regarded as one of the 3 or 4 most influential bands ever

Yes, but I don't think any of those bands sound like VU (apart from the Modern Lovers, cos I only know one of their songs)

As Brian Eno said, "Sure the first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but of those ten thousand people, every last one of them went out and formed a band." One of the most influential records of the past 30 years, The Velvet Underground & Nico still sounds ahead of its time.

i can hear the Velvets easily in all the bands i listed - especially when you think of tracks like Sister Ray

Yeah, Velvets have been hugely influential, but i prefer the bands influenced by them. Well some of them. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't like Suicide or Modern Lovers or much J&AMC. I quite liked Felt though. All the Velvets stuff just bores me. There's just something really dead sounding about it all. It just sounds kind of take-it-or-leave-it. Occasionally I'll hear some Velvet Underground that I almost like, but it just makes me want to go and put on Beggars Banquet or the Performance soundtrack.

Plus I can't stand Lou Reed.

I have a similar thing with Black Sabbath. I love loads of bands whose lodestone is Sabbath. But I don't love Sabbath.
