Most important musicians of our time

In that case we need to sort the definition of "musician" also. (Dylan is put forward here as a songwriter).

So clarity needed on:

"Most important"

"Of our time"

and

"Musician".

Why do they have to be famous what about individuals busking in the streets. Surely somebody like Richard Blues who is playing classic rock and roll blues guitar in Covent Garden is just as important as any musician?

but his debut album's sound was totally ripped of thirlwell & ministry? you could hardly call reznor ahead of his time...

I was putting into the equation all the stuff he does with the internet - free albums downloadable without any restrictions, the raw files available for people to remix and upload, the use of technology to promote (look at this for an example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Zero_(album)#Promotion - using websites, usb keys left at gigs around the world for fans to find, heat sensitive CD's that change colour etc, the innovation in sound and lighting to match the mood of the songs in a live setting, and all that other gubbins.

yeah - he took the Ministry blueprint (and looked at how far *they* travelled from their debut to where they are now), and refined it.

Obvs - its all horses for courses, but thats my suggestion based on the whole concept of the group (maaaaaaan), and the advances they have made in sound/vision technology

dunno what you mean by our time. But Robert Johnson pretty much invented rock'n'roll. It's all there; other people just unpacked it.

In terms of dance music, James Brown is a kind of similar figure: the repetition and economy and space and maybe most importantly the timbre of the sounds in his music.

This thread is pointless cos most of what the average u75 er would hate has been influential to a lot of the artists they listen too. Cos what a musician likes and a trendy journalist or Observer music monthly reader likes aint neccesarily the same
