Most fucking annoying supposedly 'ok' comedy

BootyLove said:

Recent stuff like Spaced, the Office and Brass Eye is much funnier than the supposed classics in my opinion... particularly light entertainment shite like Dad's Army, one foot in the grave and keeping up appearances... The only consistently good old comedy that I can think of is Fawlty Towers. (Not saying the new stuff is consistently good).

christ...I'm not very good at being put on the spot...give us a minute1

If it was easy, it wouldn't be worth it. I am the kind of nerd who spends hours pondering such questions.
Like Stephen Hawking except Rigsby V Sergeant Wilson rather than quantum mechanics V relativity.

I agreed with you sort of (I don't know what Spaced is as don't live in England) till you mentioned Dad's Army. Please..think on! It is genius. Perfect satire on class system

as much as I enjoy The Office I really don't think it will have the same longevity as Porridge or Dad's Army

as for Brass Eye....I enjoyed it the first few times but it again seems tired and forced now....

'I always thought I was working class till I went to Scotland' McKay gives the eye! Brilliant. Barrington is is great as well. And Ives and Lukewarm and of course Godber.

'My Hero' usually gives me a chuckle.

*runs off* :o
No need for embarrasment! Some of the episodes are genuinely funny, some parts of the comedy don't work for me though. It was written by one of the Father Ted writers I believe. He also did Black Books which I think is great.

Red Dwarf was great for the first few series but went rapidly downhill when Kachansky replaced Rimmer - I think they were guilty of carrying on the series when they'd run out of fresh ideas.

And whoever dissed The Office - LOL - it's the BBC's biggest ever selling DVD, I can't fault the comedy.

Recent comedy I just don't understand the appeal of:

The Royle Family
To the Manor Born
Gimme Gimme Gimme
Drop the Dead Donkey

I think Captain Mainwaring wins but hard to argue with Norman Stanley. Pity that Ronnie Barker is such a right wing bugger now he is old. Doesn't affect Porridge of course.

Barker is brilliant but it's the whole package, the stories, the banter, the undercurrent of pain and sorrow and the warmth

Stupid boy....

Mainwaring is the perfect embodiement of the little Englander.....and like you say you've got all levels of society in there battling it out

Royle Family is good. A bit sentimental at times but no real harm in that. Certainly doesn't offend like 'Men Behaving Badly' which just makes you want to cry under the duvet with a bottle of wine and Hatful of Hollow.

Didn't know that - certainly doesn't show in Porridge as you say, or Open All Hours. I've heard from people who know him that Coogan isn't a very nice person IRL.

I like The Royle Family, again it's got that warmth to it that British sit-coms do so well

another one is Early Doors, nowt much to it but it makes me laugh but can also stop you dead and bring a tear to your eye...

The way he looks after Godber in the boxing one but then Godber has been doing a deal with Grouchy all along :D

Yes! I am being twee again but Shandy sent me Early Doors recently and I really liked it. I love the landlord actor when he plays 'Rog' in Royle family Christmas edition. Really reminded me of growing up in northern England in 1980s with people who had 'made a success' of their lives and had never read a book and were proud of it and were Tories although their parents would have been proud labour members and being about 14 and desperate to kill them but not really knowing why.

Doctor:
Are you now or have you ever been a practising homosexual?

Fletcher:
What, with these feet ... who'd have me?

Yes...I don't think it is much cop. I have enjoyed agreeing with you so far. Anxious Smiley!

But I love the episode on the train where he is first let out of Slade and meets Mckay and McaKay gets pissed. Brillinat!

hehe...don't worry, I've never seen it, just wondered how it compared.

now then...The Likely Lads and Whatever Happened To...
yay or neigh?

Yah!!!!! Whatever Happened is better than original I think but I like both. I actually look like Rodney Bewes and (true :o :) ) which I didn't like as a kid but wear like Victoria Cross now. It is the class thing again. Bob ferris and his membership of the Tennis Club and Terry out the army with no prospects and Thelma aspirational but Bob secretly wanting to just pop out for a pint with Terry and Gateshead and it all being a bit sad - Bob havibg fondu party and trying to convince himself that this is the life he always wanted when you just know he was happier in the factory getting his mate to clock out for him early etc etc etc.

I think it is great! It makes me happy to put on tele when I am a bit :( You know that song 'Last night a DJ saved my life' ? I am sure that 70's comedy has got me out of a few black spots! :)

nice one...we agree again! I love it...especially the sequel, bitter and cynical Terry who just wants things to be how they were and Bob being forced into bettering himself...

sort of bleak but then again not...but it's got that sense of reality

Theme tune is really sad:

'Oh, what happened to you, whatever happened to me? What became of the people we used to be...

..and the only thing to look forward to..the past'

Compare that to fucking 'Friends'
- smug cunts

I remember you taking the cunt out of me for my pissed blethers about 'being trapped etc mking good comedy' (something like 'hark at Barry Norman' :D ) and fair play I was being pretentious arse but is there any comedy you like where the people are content and happy? I am thinking now.....

:D

I probably said it because I'm not very good with words....and I find it really hard to analyse things :o

happy comedy??? hmmmm
