Most depressing song ever

"One of my turns" by Pink Floyd

Day after day
Love turns grey
like the skin on a dying man.
But night after night,
we pretend its alright,
but I have grown older,
and you have grown colder,
and nothing is very much fun anymore!

Etc, etc,
By this time you have the gun at your temple!

A song about breakup and divorce.
As someone whos done the deed twice believe me, its accurate!! ;)

Depressed?? I wanna cut my own throat :(

Anything I hear by Coldplay makes me want to cut Coldplay's throats.

I think the most depressing song ever is actually that one by the Fast Food Rockers, for several reasons:

1) It's unbearably shite
2) It provided free advertising to scummy grease merchants
3) The Fast Food Rockers themselves seemed like the most pathetic, begging-for-a-career dimwits I've ever seen - seeing one of them telling Simon Amstell that he firmly believed that record was their first step on the road to international stardom was like watching a puppy being kicked around by its master and then running back for more.

one of them auditioned for the "boys will be girls" thing on channel four where ex-boy band members pretend to be a girl band.

not sure if he got through cos I was too busy clawing out my own eyes.

Keane - 'Bed Shaped'
Black Eyed Peas - 'Pump It'
Guns'n'Roses - 'One In A Million'
Buju Banton - 'Boom Bye Bye'
Anything by Westshite
Anything by Dildo
Anything by Corinne fucking Bailey fucking Rae

For a start. :)

I like depressing songs. The Eternal by Joy Division is their heaviest in this sense. Isolation, whilst lyrically sad is, IMO, one of their poppier ones.

'Do You Realise?' by Flaming Lips IS very sad but very lovely.

'Teardrops' by Massive Attack is not in the slightest bit depressing. It's lush. Liz Frazer could sing a shopping receipt and make it sound ethereal.

All Morrissey/Smiths songs are tounge in cheek and maudlin at worst. 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' is fucking brilliant.

To find something depressing because you don't like it is fair enough but in reality the emotion you feel is more like anger than sadness. Black Eyed Peas aren't depressing, they are annoying.

'Hedonism' by Skunk Anansie and 'Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine' by Beth Orton are very sad songs - but I like listening to them.

Actually that's not true - there are songs that have induced a real grey-out of worldwide humanloathing and made me genuinely fear for the worth of our species, such is their mindnumbing awfulness.

No, they're both. And big runny shite, mustn't leave that one out.

I said it for its musical sombreness, without paying attention to the vocals much.

And the winner IS

Paradise Estate
by The Television Personalities

Mrs. Brown wakes up every morning
She takes the milk from her doorstep
Puts on a pair of faded carpet slippers
And walks a painful mile to the launderette

Her husband Jack is slowly dying
Asbestos poisoning had riddled his insides
He got his pension six years early
When they took away his job they took away his pride

Mrs. Wilson sets her clock for seven
To see the children off to school
She can't afford to give them breakfast
Well not as a rule

Her husband Jack has run away
Gone with the barmaid from the Roses' Crown
Picks up her prescription every Friday
She's heading for her second nervous breakdown

Jennifer Lee is only seventeen
She had a baby when she was still at school
Her parents have disowned her
And the social service barely calls

The father was a boy she met at a party
Her sister Debbie's twenty-first
She can't remember his face or his name very well
Anyway he probably doesn't remember her

And every day's the same
On paradise estate
Because paradise came one day too late

We all live in little boxes
Boxes made of bricks
Boxes for unmarried mothers
Elderly and sick
Graffiti on the walls
Tells it all
"Gary loves July"
National Front slogans
"Jesus is coming"
"Kilroy was here"

But paradise came one day too late
On paradise estate

On a completely different level, anything by the Spice Girls or Britney Spears.

"I know we could be so happy (if we wanted to be)"

Post break up, half finished due to artist's unfortunate death. Sad really :(

Ones that have depressing connections for you personally don't count.

I'd say either

Hurt by Johnny Cash
Hurt by NIN
or Puff the magic dragon by peter, paul and mary (only just realised how sad that song is :( )
:) Yep, I think its Hurt - Jonny cash is very poiniant,,, I seem to see my life in that song,, One of those songs that you think could've been specially written for you,,,

:( Some horrible lads in school used to sing Puff the magic dragon when i walked past,, coz I smoked,,they really taunted me,,
heh,,,One of the kids,, Wanted me to get him some puff few years later,,
I did,, and took a chunk off it(when there was mainly only solid about)

I was going to suggest Cliff Richard in that context - by all accounts some of his early stuff will be out of copyright soon - whoopee ! :p

.

Caroline Says II - Lou Reed
Good Feeling - Violent Femmes
The Drugs Don't Work - Verve (vicariously depressing - friend lost father to cancer and bawled each time she heard it :( )

I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine - Beth Orton is a great song, poignant but not depressing......

Finding 'Night After Night' by The Sounds quite sad at the moment which is very strange!

Yes, I believe he's campaigning for copyright laws to be changed so he can get royalties for 70 years like the songwriters.

70 years  That SEVENTY YEARS OF LIVING FUCKING DOLL!!

So think on.

don't know why, but these 3 70's moustache/cock rock ballots sprang to mind

Come down off your throne and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I’ve been waiting so long.
Somebody holds the key.

But I’m near the end and I just ain’t got the time
And I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home.

Come down on your own and leave your body alone.
Somebody must change.
You are the reason I’ve been waiting all these years.
Somebody holds the key.

Chorus

But I can’t find my way home.
But I can’t find my way home.
But I can’t find my way home.
But I can’t find my way home.
Still I can’t find my way home,
And I ain’t done nothing wrong,
But I can’t find my way home.

Laughing
The Guess Who

I should laugh, but I cry
Because your love has passed me by.
You took me by surprise.
You didn't realize
That I was waiting.

Time goes slowly,
But carries on.
And now the best years
Have come and gone.
You took me by surprise.
I didn't realize
That you were laughing.

Laughing! The things you're doing to me.
Laughing! They're not the way it should be.
You took away everything I had.
You put the hurt on me.
Laughing! The things you're doing to me.
Laughing! They're not the way it should be.
You took away everything I had.
You put the hurt on me.

I go alone now
Calling your name
After losing
At the game.
You took me by surprise.
I didn't realize
That you were laughing

Time goes slowly,
But carries on.
And now the best years
Have come and gone.
You took me by surprise.
I didn't realize
That you were laughing.

Laughing! The things you're doing to me.
Laughing! They're not the way it should be.
You took away everything I had.
You put the hurt on me.
Laughing! The things you're doing to me.
Laughing! They're not the way it should be.
You took away everything I had.
You put the hurt on me.

(by eric clapton)

Bell bottom blues, you made me cry.
I don’t want to lose this feeling.
And if I could choose a place to die
It would be in your arms.

Do you want to see me crawl across the floor to you?
Do you want to hear me beg you to take me back?
I’d gladly do it because
I don’t want to fade away.
Give me one more day, please.
I don’t want to fade away.
In your heart I want to stay.

It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
The way that you treat me baby.
Once I was strong but I lost the fight.
You won’t find a better loser.

Chorus

Chorus

Bell bottom blues, don’t say goodbye.
I’m sure we’re gonna meet again,
And if we do, don’t you be surprised
If you find me with another lover.

Chorus

I don’t want to fade away.
Give me one more day please.
I don’t want to fade away.
In your heart I long to stay.

I had a knife to my wrists listening to Script for a Jesters Tear once!

Never again have I listened to Marillion.

anything by celine dion

I heard a happy hardcore version of my heart will go on working at a bar.

Made me realise the human race may not actually deserve to exist :D

More seriously the most obvious examples of depressing music (Joy Division, Smiths Nick Drake etc.) are the music i find keeps me going i those dark, Dark Hours.
And Hurt, well to sit down as you're dying and pour that onto tape, to have the courage to sing and mean that, i think speaks of a greatness of spirit and personal honesty we should all aspire to.

IMO The Smiths is some of the best tidying up music in the world. That an Hanoi Rocks version of Up round the bend.
