Most dangerous/silly things road users have done?

I once bump started my Nissan Sunny 120Y in reverse against the traffic on the A34 dual carriage way near Newbury; if you're into adrenalin rushes I can recommend the experience.

In the same car I also had the joy of trying to filter into fast moving traffic on the A27 dual carriage way near Havant with a badly, and I mean badly slipping clutch (this was towards the end of a Bristol to Brighton trip which saw the clutch diminish from poor to non-existent. This was another one for the thrill seekers as my rear view mirror became rapidly filled with a National Express coach, headlights flashing, horn blaring.

My Sunny was metallic burgundy with a black vinyl roof.

There's most definitely a correlation between lack of concern for other road users, and the number of wheels on whatever you're riding on/in.

The most rewarding experience I ever saw was at a T junction on Kennington road, where a cyclist jumping a red light in front of the bus I was on got hit from the side by another cyclist, who had jumped the red light on the side road that had also just turned red. Both ended up in a head on the road, then stood in the middle of the road arguing with each other, whilst the light had turned green, preventing any traffic from going past, totally oblivious to the chaos they were causing by their stupidity.

Mm, because nobody driving a car has ever done anything like that, eh?

I didn't say all - or even most - car drivers are perfect... but most London cyclists think they own the road, weaving in and out of stopped traffic, changing lanes, or going down white lines... and that's just plain wrong as well as dangerous.

If people want to ride a bike... then fine, but do it with consideration for those around you, who through being taxed excessively, are providing you with a surface to ride on.

I could never ride a bike in London. I'm too consciencious and law-abiding.

Well, you must live in a different London from the one I grew up in and spent 40 years of my life in. Yes, there are plenty of cyclists who do behave badly, but they're still very much in the minority.

It's just that most cyclists quietly get on with it and don't get noticed.

Many cyclists will also be drivers. Or, as LTC has just pointed out in his post, they'll be council tax payers. And in any event, the amount of wear and tear and additional cost that cyclists represent in the road budget is absolutely, infinitesimally negligible.

*grins* I think you may be showing a slight bias, there. What happened? Did you get frightened by a bicycle as a child, or something?

Come watch me cycle to work one day ajdown, it'd be an education for you.

I don't disagree that there are some cunts out there, but you notice them for that very reason. There are plenty of "consciencious and law-abiding" ones too.

Accidently blocked the A1 with a rolling roadblock. Underpowered landys and and idiot trying to enforce convoy rules oops.

Drivers reversing in the road without looking. Most common when they approach the main road from a side road with their nose sticking out. After realising they are causing traffic jams by blocking the road, they then reverse without looking to correct their mistake.

This is what happened today and the reversing car hit a kid who was crossing the road. Please drivers look before reversing!

I saw a cyclist going no-handed through red lights across the crossroads from Vauxhall Embankment onto Vauxhall Bridge last night and then later on the bridge, cross lanes to the right, still with no hands and without looking, to get to the bus island and then run a red light through pedestrians coming from the station

The difference between cyclists' lack of care and attention to details and motorists' is the impact it can have on others. The cyclist's main danger is to him/her self as they are likely to come off worse in any collision, even a collision (however undesirable) with a pedestrian is likely to result only in injury whereas motorists by jumping red lights, driving with poor lane discipline and other lack of care can result in pedestrian deaths and injuries.

I recall the department for transport figures show that every year 2-3 (and some years 1 or 0) people get killed in accidents where the cyclist is found to be the main cause whereas something like 250 people a year get killed crossing the road at zebra crossings or when car drivers mount the kerb - both through lack of care and attention to detail.

The argument that cyclists dont pay for transport is also plainly wrong, even if a cyclist does not own a car they still buy goods in the shops and pay VAT, usually earn an income and pay income tax and in most cases also pay council tax - money from all of these goes to general government expenditure which includes the roads. A wider argument on cyclists and road tax can be found at http://cyclinginfo.co.uk/blog/cycling/cyclists-pay-road-tax/

returning to the subject of this stream I have as a cyclist on several occasions done many things that are silly - mostly under the influence of drink: on numerous occasions I used to cycle all the way from Angel to Streatham including a sprint around Elephant and Castle roundabouts whilst very very drunk

I've done silly things on my bike too, but I've never gone no-handed - this guy was an adult! What is it that makes someone do something so daft?
