More debunking of iPhone sales hype...

The fact that the original iPhone was seriously lacking in even some of the most basic smartphone features was pretty much irrelevant to their target market, most of whom had never used a smartphone - making Apple's effort seem positively awesome in comparison to what they'd owned before.

No, the reason that people didnt care about some features missing was that the iPhone was the first "smartphone" that presented a big enough jump up in usablility/functionality to draw those consumers away from the feature phone market.

They had used smartphones before, there just wasnt one with enough wow factor to prompt people to make the jump.

The whole point of the iPhone - and one of the drivers for its success - was that it made smartphones acceptable to the masses. That's why so many people made it their first ever smartphone.

...many of the iPhone's are first-time "smartphone" owners in the US

Maybe, but I'd be willing to bet that many people who bought them had owned symbian "smartphones", bought for features like the cameras, but never bothered to use email or the web on them as they were just to much faf.

Also worth noting that's from the US where the market was different.

Are we talking about feature phones or smartphones here?

There was a massive rise in the use of mobile email and web when the iPhone came out, so I'd suggest that it was folks moving from feature phones rather than smartphones. The iPhone was the first phone for many that could do stuff like email and the web easily, hence its success.

Um you just backed up my point? Careful we are going to start agreeing if this keeps up.

Just because its their first smartphone, doesnt mean they didnt know what a smartphone was before.
