Oh dear, and you started the post off so well!

I have no idea what David Miliband was talking about (I presume he was talking about people living under dictatorships wanting to live in a democracy because xyz) but in comparison to most of the world, I don't think we have it bad in this country at all as far as freedom is concerned. Obviously it's not perfect or to everyone's liking, but seriously, are we really living under some kind of invisible dictatorship that only the most enlightened can see?

Well people go on about the lack of freedom in this country all the time in order to criticise it, yes, to similar extents (or more) than they criticise countries that really are oppressive. There are problems in all countries, and no country can be entirely free (nor is that desirable to the vast majority), but when compared with the rest of the world, I think we have it pretty good here, and every time people criticise to the same extent as if we really did live in a dictatorship, then I think that criticism loses credibility. Let me give you an example, somebody on this thread mentioned ID cards to show how oppressed we were. Well we don't have ID cards and practically every country in Europe does have ID cards (often compulsory), so does that make the UK one of the most free countries in Europe?
