Moonshine risk assessment

Had a relative dragged before the court after his still on his allotment blew up ex admiral, retired dentist gp and civil servant
All fined. HMRC really loose what little sense of humour they have if they catch you Its tradition really:).
Mind you it was hastings

Three dead in Queensland. Media reported it as drinking home distilled spirits, grappa or in some press just "homebrew"
Turns out the bloke was also making his own bio-diesel and his sons and a couple of mates drank a load thinking it was a spirit. Must have used some good mixer to mask the taste.

No doubt home brewers and distillers to be targeted in knee jerk reaction.

Its legal in Oz to home distill isn't it? Is there any chat of changing that following that event?

Incedentally, ive decided to put my still building on hold till october. The reason is that i'm on a giro at the moment, and i just dont have the money to do this steadily buying incremental pieces to build the still. Whereas, in October i will be a full time student again, and i will get student loan payments, and id be able to buy all the stuff i need in one fell swoop with my first student loan payment..

So in the meantime, ill just start cultivating my whisky palate :)

No, it is far from legal, it is a federal offence and they have no sense of humor as far as revenue as concerned.

ATO said:
If you want to distil alcohol you must hold an excise manufacturer licence prior to distilling alcohol, regardless of the size or capacity of the still.
You must pay excise duty on any alcohol you produce. The current rate is in excess of $71 per litre of alcohol. For example, on a 700ml bottle of vodka at an alcoholic strength of 40% the excise duty would be approximately $20 per bottle.

Added Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich, and Highland Park to the whiskies ive tried. I had a shot of glenmorangie this morning afternoon, what struck me was the very fruity flavour of the nose and first taste of it. Had a real fireyness to it too, almost overpowering. A bit of a bitter aftertaste though, but i only had one shot of it so i think its something i would try a few more times to see if its something i could adapt to. Glenfiddich, i thought was pretty similiar but it was like as if the fruityness was diminished whilst the aftertaste came quicker and was stronger. So i don't think ill be bothering with that again. Just bought a bottle of Highland Park there, which i have bought on recommendation from ex wife whose late grandad swore by it. so im going to give that a bash. will report back on it.

Had a few more laphroigs on friday night, its by far my favourite, but i really dont want it to be my favourite, just beucause it seems quite fashionable, and i want to be sooooo different lol.

ok kids are nearly in bed so sampling time for highland park coming soon, says on the bottle that its got a peating part of the process, but i can't smell it frmo the bottle, its sure as hell not laphroaig, thats for sure..

Home brewing is a fair bit cheaper if your on the dole. I'd love to do, but don't have the space at the moment.

Depends how intense it is. I don't like the whiskies that make my mouth feel like I've just sucked a piece of charcoal. Talisker is okay, but Ardbeg is a bit much for my taste.

take it you wouldnt like laphroaig then?

you know how when you have whisky on the rocks (my experience only so far is with jack daniels mind you) that that first intense taste you dont get, its masked by the ice. i think thats the same with laphroaig, and maybe thats why its quite popular, the smokeyness disguises the other intense whisky flavoours one would normally get.

ok highland park has really grown on me, i think not only is it true that whisky in general is an acquired taste, but i think for each brand one has to try it a good few times before making a judgement on it. highland park, was not impressed with to start off with, but its mellowness has grown on me since ive been drinking this bottle the last 3 days.

kinda glad that being on a giro means that i can't afford to develop a single malt kinda alchoholism!

one of the good things about being divorcee 'feckless dad' is that i can pretty much turn my one bedroom flat into a microbrewery at some point.
