Season one or season two?

You gotta remember he's on it for a long haul, he really wants to set up a legal distillery and teach his son the trade to pass it on. Tickles just a pisshead

so thats me watched the whole 2 seasons. JimBob is a total legend! Am almost looking forward to the third season with its cliffhanger as i am breaking bad.

Thats me tried 4 whiskies now. Just bought a bottle of the famous grouse there. Its definately bottom of the pile. So far, in order with preferance is

1) Laphroaig - had a few with my friend last week. Its really bizzare im actually liking whisky with a wee bit of water in it. SO weird after avoiding spirits even with mixers all my life. Love the smokey peatyness in it.
2.) Jamiesons - drank a couple of them 2 weeks ago interspersed with a couple of laphroaigs. I was picking two whiskys to see if they really did taste different and they do massively. Liked the smoothness of it, which i am told is owing to the triple distilled nature of irish whiskey.
3.)Whyte and Macakaye - it was really good in a hot toddy which i got to deal with my cold. I also had a couple with orange juice and really liked it. Wish i had tried it straight/with water though.
4.) Famous Grouse - got a really nasty aftertaste, but it is my first glass, am drinking it with water and maybe itll grow on me.

Hmm one small glass of whisky definately gives one more of a 'kick' than a can of lager, despite being the same alcohol unit amount roughly. why would that be?

Cause your brain is not used to 1 large hit of Ethanol (as its carried throught your blood stream to your brain more efficiently), which in turn releases an amount of dopamines and Gaba receptor activities that equates to a slower intake of the same amount of psychoactive liqure that you are used to, which in turn would have a slowere release / gaba affect.

So i take it that will be temporary and once i get used to spirits it will be just the same as beer?

To an extent, yes, but by that time you are on the worrying path of using alcohol too much.

Years back I could quite easily put away 1/2 to 3/4 of a litre of vodka during an evening (or morning if I was working nights)
I tend to stay away from spirits now, I very rarely have them in the house and will only have them when on holiday or around christmas.

its funny how that worrying path of using too much alcohol comes on suddenly. in one of my jobs it seemed we went to the pub after every work day....

Im just trying to get a taste for spirits since im building a still...

Did you see the interview ones where they had group interviews.

The other two weren't too stoked on jim Tom when that was filmed.

Lawless is a good film set in prime bootlegging time too if you haven't seen it

The Grouse tastes "nasty" because your palate has got used to malt whisky (Laphroaig and The Jameson), and you're tasting the grain whisky blended into it (something the OJ and/or the hot water would have masked in the W & M).

And yeah, Irish is smmmmmmmmmoooooooooootttttttttthhhhhhhhhhh, isn't it? :D

Ahh yeah, never thought of that. What i need to do now is try and have a couple of exclusivly grain whiskies to get used to. Any suggestions?

According to the Census my family lived at a place called Moonshine Farm for 300 years. I assume they had some sort of distillery, wonder what they made and what it tasted like :)

What was the main crop of the area they lived in? That should give you a clue. :)
According to my dad, after the 1940s, the main hootch/shine in his part of Norfolk was beet-based, prior to that, spud. :)

Probably Cameron Brig if it's still made.
TBF, I prefer my grain whiskies as Bourbon rather than Scotch.

Right. I've bought some jack daniels.. Am gonna have it with water - is that the correct way to do it? Just jack and coke makes me think of rock clubs, sweaty rockers, and mettalica for some reason.

would love to know about the history of illegal shine production in the UK. It seems that despite scotland say being the home of whisky, the whole notion of making whisky at home doesn't seem to have the same cultural import as it has in america...wonder why?

I tend to drink my Bourbon neat. Jack is fairly smooth, somewhat vanilla-ish/caramel-ish (from the barrels), and not an arse-kicker by any means. Try a sip neat, then add some water if you want to.

I can't remember where I read it, but the west country and Wales both supposedly have a long history of illegal distilling.

well one thing ive realised about jack daniels is that it makes you take the piss out of what you are watching on the tv. I was watching wallander there and was like "yeah that bits like uhm totally believeable" being totally sarcastic in a totally non-witty kinda way.

i had the jack with water, but then i tried it neat, but after a couple of sips, i added two ice cubes. Ive never done "on the rocks" but it really makes it go down real smooth. But it feels like cheating!!! I've got one glass left, and ill have taht without ice cubes and see how it is.

I can really notice the sugared charcole filtration in the smell of the drink. I have to say, its nice, but im not sure if i prefer the smoothness of jamiesons over the smoothness of jack D. I think ill need to compare them both more... :D but i definately think im much more of a fan of the single malt thus far (although ive only had laphroiag a few times)..

im really enjoying this whole getting into whisky malarky!

not that there is anything bad about metallica btw!!!!

ha. funny you should mention that. the JD bottle is so lovely. i was like, i should start collecting my bottles when they are finished. Whats worrying is that the aforementioned famous grouse was a quater bottle, the JD is a half bottle. how long till i progress to full alcoholism?

Try Wild Turkey next. On ice, nothing else.
