Moonshine risk assessment

On moonshiners there's two proteges of a moonshiner called barney who looked like a right interesting character too. He was a musician also.

Ill probably watch that documentary tonight too.

I didnt know you could get legal moonshine until watching the documentary.

watched two episodes of moonshiners documentary there thanks to good old torrents. That tim guy seems waaay overcautious...

If you aren't sure what you are doing it is really fucking important that you install a thermometer near where the vapour comes out of the heating pot and before it hits the condenser.

Find out the correct temperatures and discard the first part after your thermometer reads the correct temperature. Keep an eye on the temperature throughout and empty your collection vessel frequently as if the temperature starts to rise or drop you will have to discard that bit as well.

Don't do it very often and don't get bladdered on it days in a row.

The way they get the flavour in to whiskey, brandy etc is to distill and then age it in old wine barrels. You might be able to get some online but I couldn't say where.

You can get glass distilling equipment (water cooled) as used science equipment off Ebay.

I've seens whisky barrells for sale on the internet for about £45. Yeah im going to put a thenometor on it for those reasons - dont want to go blind through my booze nor do i want my still to become a pipe bomb!

it is fucking rough

i reckon the only reason people drink it is for pure badness

Never tried it before. I don't actually like spirits at all - its more just for the hobbyist nature of doing it. Reckon i should start trying to drink spirits to see if i can develop a taste for them for whence i actually get some product.

Season one or season two?

You gotta remember he's on it for a long haul, he really wants to set up a legal distillery and teach his son the trade to pass it on. Tickles just a pisshead

This thread just reminded me of a story I saw in yesterday's Independent about a bar in New Jersey which was caught mixing food dye with rubbing alcohol and serving it as scotch  Many other places in the state are accused of deceiving their customers by putting cheap booze in premium brand bottles.

Happens all the time here (China). You can usually tell it's so bad (if they use the local grain spirit baijiu it has such a strong taste it's a giveaway) but occasionally drunk more than I should before noticing for a really rotten head.

I do. I seldom drink these days but I like a good whisky, Lagavulin or Jura being my favourite, good rum and good gin.

I bought a quater bottle of whisky yesterday (whyte and mckay) to try and get into the taste of it seeing as im going to be trying to make it. Quite nice with orange juice, but i dont think thats proper whisky drinking!

Remember trying to buy booze in an off license in NJ. they take their ID laws very seriously dont they..

Gonna give baijiu a try :)

It's a right mixed bag is all I can offer, with a bit of you get what you pay for (and can pay a bundle these days of noveau rich all over here). Funnily enough, best stuff I ever had was farmer's homebrew out of a big plastic jerry can.

what are the laws like for distilling in china?

I don't know, now you ask. This was way up in the mountains so sure no-one ever bothered. There was another really nice local brew there made by the non-Han ethnic group out of sorghum in these big clay pots. About the strength of sherry and similar colour, that you took turns drinking through a bamboo straw you had to then offer on to the next person, which made for good sociable sessions.

Whyte & McKay is a blended Scotch. It's grain whisky blended with malt whisky. It's a "proper whisky", but only if you're mixing it with someting.
In fact the only blended Scotch I like the flavour of enough to drink neat is Famous Grouse.

I just drink it on the rocks.

You can get premade stills on ebay with temp gauges that claim to make the process safer.

I know myself to well though and it's probably not a good idea that I have access to large quantities of very cheap spirits.

Aye i've seen them - but im kinda liking the idea of picking up some skills in the process of building one - since i reckon that at the age of 34 i should be able to do a bit more than change a lightbulb or a plug.

I'm gonna put a 'thumper' in it i think as apparently this double distills the mash.
