When the comedy show was hit though it was absolutely brilliant, fish-slapping dance, ministry of silly walks, ex-parrot etc. It's the perfect example of what there is to English humour that them foreigners just don't get. Apart from Russians, weirdly, who seem to find it hilarious.

IME asking Europeans from many different countries about what comedy they like (not specifically British), loads say Python or Fawlty Towers. Or as soon as they clock you're from the UK they sometimes strike up a conversation about it.

absolutely huge monty python fan, ever since I first saw an episode aged around 8...

Same. I remember around the early 90s BBC2 repeated a load of the Flying Circus. My Dad, who was at Uni in the early 70s and hence a huge Pythonite, suggested I watched it and I just loved its silliness. Now when I watch it I pick up little bits that I'd have missed back then.

Yeah, the Frogs love it. Indeed, my original introduction to the Holy Grail / Life of Brian was at my French exchange's house when I was about 15...

Flying Circus is about %30 genius, I reckon. The movies are superb. Not crap. And the Pythons themselves have done all sorts of other superb stuff.

I'd a agree with that: there was an awful lot of eminently forgettable dross in MPFS, punctuated by the occasional sketch of genius.

I have a confession to make, which is that I haven't watched Brazil properly. I actually have the DVD, watched about a third of it ages ago, and the Missus found it Too Weird. Need to give it a proper go.

Haven't they only shown the Germans Fawlty episode in Germany for the first time in the last year?

Of course, one of their greatest things from any of their TV shows, this, was from a 'special' they did for German telly. My mate had a video of it, it had one episode in German and one in English.

I showed it on a large wall by projecter at a squat party in Magdeburg 12 years ago. It was really funny being the only person laughing out loud as Fawlty did his funny walk and a load of very stoned antifa Germans watched in bemusement. :D

I think John Cleese more or less admitted that the Pythons had little or no idea as to which of their sketches would work and which wouldn't; he said they would try out lots of different things to try and gauge what was worth doing and what wasn't.

I loved the penguin sketch (with Ken Rosewall as a zoologist trying to prove that a penguin was highly intelligent), but I've never met anyone who even remembers it.

It deserved a smile :) I still don't think I really get the hilarity of it all though :D:(

Comedy works on people if it's close to home. Which is why the terribly written and not very funny Little Britain was surprisingly successful. No clever writing was needed as people could relate to the characters, for whatever reason.

The above scene may just raise a smile. But if you watch it in the context of Urban75 - as in, "I'm more working class than you and I don't live in a hostel I live in the bin round the back" then it slowly induces mirth.

And the fact they're all well dressed compounds the point.

Youtube started showing me programmes featuring Python people which is when I heard about the German project.

At 72, Eric Idle looked a lot like Michael Hordern :hmm:
