Monitor saying 'No signal detected'

The alternative, of course is simply to plug the hard drive into the other PC's spare connection ...

Quite possibly zero cost.

If you have had the graphics card out, put it back in and connect it to a monitor. Start the machine. Still no joy, possibly the graphics card, but also possibly the battery for the CMOS is dead. This has caused my old machine to exhibit this exact fault.

Resetting the CMOS memory may well cure it, but if the battery is quite dead then it may well get corrupted again and only the replacement of the battery and a long reset sorted the problem out for me. This may or may not be the issue for you.

I suggest taking it to someone who can help.

They don't appear to be compatible. I'm just about to leave to go up to PC world. I'll see what they say.

They can fuck the fuck off

Surely they're not that bad :hmm:

They are that bad, seriously I've yet to meet a retail computer shop assistant that is even half way competent.

I'm a prick though and love getting them into really detailed technical conversations :)

PC world offered to fix it for 80 quid so I just bought a caddy. I have a sleeping baby on me right now but when she wakes up I'll crack on with trying it out.

I've taken the hard drive out, put it in the caddy and have a choice of computers to run it through. My laptop has 195 GB spare but its operating system is Vista. I can't remember if the old computer was Windows 98 or XP. Will there be any incompatibility isues?

ownership is only going to be a issue if the original machines user account had a password. Post back any issues you run into ill be on most of the evening working

I've done it :)

I don't know if it would be an ownership issue but it seems everything is there apart from all my music

Still, I've got the info I desperately needed so thanks very much guys

The muisc isn't there because CornishAcid moved it onto an external hard drive a couple of weeks ago :D
