There might well be some truth to that DC, but I think that it would be useful to consider the terms used by non-Muslims and Muslims for the last 1400 years or so. I have yet to hear any Muslim refer to themselves as anything other than a Muslim, and the use of that older term is probably the result of non-Muslims not understanding quite what Islam was/is or how it works.
Anyway, regarding the book. The general premise, such as it has been described, could be very engaging, it would be interesting to see what the author makes of the available narrative material - and how it is developed, extended or explored.

From what some are saying the two sporting clubs linked to above have made a mistake in misunderstanding the correct name for their religion, and according to some have effectively called themselves "niggers". Unlikely at best.

Your wording gave the impression that it wasn't important whether or not the book was published or banned.
Maybe I put it badly. To me it isn't important. After all these books are usually written to cause problems with those that it will matter to and people sometimes get hurt.
Even if it was supposed to be a serious work no bugger will ever read it anyway so who cares?
I would support freedom of speech but no if it's insulting. Don't care if it's Muslim extremists or BNP type racist twats. If they preach hate or try to cause trouble they are better off with no publicity.
