Mogwai

Well, I got the new album on Friday and listened over the weekend.

It's erm Mogwai. I mean by that it has all of the component parts of a Mogwai album - bangers, slow melancholic windswept brooders, one with vocals, shades of light and dark etc etc but it left me cold.

I don't know if the formula is one of diminishing returns and they need a radical reboot or if I am just Moggers jaded.

Views?
Yes, it's not bad or anything but it is a little by the numbers. With the Les Revenants soundtrack they seemed to be going into a new direction, but since then they have stalled a bit IMO.

I would like to see them maybe use some guest vocalists (for example minor victories bandmates of Stuart - James from Twilight Sad, Rachel Goswell), go more electronic, go all our bangers. Just something that moves the concept forward.

I guess I kind of want something that's always different, always the same. I mean every Nick Cave album is recognisably a Nick Cave album but things keep changing.

Rave Tapes is really good for this I think, No Medicine for Regret is a bit drum n bassy but in a v subtle and clever way

Completely agree - the Les Revenants soundtrack was the first Mogwai album in a while that really made my ears prick up... I listened to it a lot when it came out. But I've not listened to anything since more than a couple of times as they've just not grabbed me.

I've just been at a live recording for BBC Scotland in a wee studio with an audience of maybe 50 people with Mogwai RIGHT THERE in our faces playing an absolute blinder for like an hour. For free. Thanks to the other half's lightning email reply trigger finger. Possibly the best gig I've ever seen in my life. This is Barry Burns's pedal collection :D
