Mobile phone queries: an idiot asks some simple questions

does someone wipe your ass when you shit?
You know, chum, not only do I know vastly more about searching for information than you do (being a qualified librarian) but I can absolutely guarantee you that the list of things that you know and I do not will be vastly exceeded by the list of things that I know and you do not.

If you're not interested in helping, please leave the thread.

Bluetooth is a magic data transfer through the air - you put one bluetooth phone near another one and you can send stuff to it.

I don't really know how it works but that's basically what it does
Hmm. Well I'm none the wiser.

I have to log off now to take a phone call, but I will return...

Usually sending emails from a phone either incurs a small extra charge, or uses GPRS (Internet for Mobile Phones) which may not be turned on for your phone and you may need to pay extra for
Extra as in over and above what I pay to send a text?

Not sure of the phone model - all my stuff's packed away. 6020 or something?

*yawns*
If you are so well informed why do you not know of this comunication device called 'bluetooth'?

I'll leave you lot to it.... I still think its a

That'll confuse it :D

Basically, if you've never sent pictures before, you'll need to enable gprs on your phone by calling T Mobile. And yes, it's pricier than sending a text - iirc it's around 25p normally.

But I guess if you're only changing the sim, the photos should stay put.

As far as bluetooth is concerned - it's just a way of getting stuff from one thing to another - you can send stuff from your laptop to your phone for example.

I'm very untechy as you may have realised but if I can do it, so can you - and let's face it, you're a hell of a lot cleverer than me :)

There is something at the bottom of the phone that looks like it ought to connect to something else (and I don't mean the space for the recharging plug).

That's probably for the hands-free headset thingy

it costs about 30p or so

I'll probably have to dispose of the old SIM as I'm cancelling my contract with T-Mobile. As of now, hence the urgency.

The SIM card will still be accessible when the contract runs out. Just you won't be able to connect to T-Mobile with it.

Hmm. I think I've packed my stuff that came with the phone into a box file in a storage unit just this afternoon! (Hopefully I haven't actually thrown it out, which would have been a poor idea.)

Do I understand the ill-mannered lout above is claiming I'm a troll? Jesus.

Don't give him the option. In fact, not everybody in the world is completely informed about mobile phones and the gadgets and technological marvels which are involved with them: if our small-minded friend doesn't understand that then it'll be one of a very large number of things he doesn't understand.

I'll check out the Nokia website (though it's hard to do when you're simultaneously cooking dinner, looking for spare bedclothes and trying to wash out the blood from the tooth extraction you had yesterday...)

Right - I think from the site it's a Nokia 6020 (which doesn't seem to have bluetooth) rather than a 6021 (which does). It's hard to tell as the colour looks more like the 6021 but I'm sure from memory that it ended in a -0.

If it's a nokia, you should have in your settings options one called connectivity (wanky, no?). Anyway - if you've got bluetooth, it would be one of the options there

Ah, that's interesting. So I should hang on to it? Are T-Mobile likely to have a problem with that? (I ask only because the chap on the phone today advised me to dispose of it if I cancelled the contract).

Also, will it work abroad? (I'm going to be in Spain from Tuesday.)

If you click on menu
then on contacts
then on copy
sim to phone
your phone numbers are now stored on your phone.
your photos will only be stored on your phone as your sim card does not contain enough storage space to contain photo's
make sure that your phone is unlocked to your new network provider
insert your new sim
copy contacts to sim if necessary

user guide

Excellent. How do I know when it's done?(I ask because it said 68 contacts copied but then appeared to go back to the original bit saying (Copy at top of page)

One by one
All

could you send the photos to a mate's phone, and then get them to send them back to your new phone?
One thing about this: what I'd actually like to do is to get them on the internet. I've got a Photobucket account somewhere but I don't know how to go about the actual process of getting the photo from the phone to the net: particularly given as the "email it" option hasn't been very successful.

Depends how much there is! Don't want to put you out.
Tell me what you want to know, I'm on shift 'til 7am this morning with very little to do a the moment, if you want gen on mobile data, using your phone abroad, etc, no worries. There has been some very good advice on this thread already, but I think the most difficult thing about using mobiles is cutting through all the jargon. If you want any of these acronymns explaining in any level of detail just ask.

you now need to select what contact list your phone is using
sim
phone
sim + phone
either way, your numbers should now be stored on both

I've never had a phone company (O2 & Orange) have a problem with so I doubt T-mobile will. Though once you've copied the numbers over you may as well dispose of it.

Most phones will work in Spain and your Nokia 6020 certainly will though it would depend on your contract if you can actually make calls. Usually, it will also cost you to receive calls as well as make them. If you are spending lots of time there go and buy a local Pay-As-You-Go SIM card. It will be compatible with your phone and will save money.

On a Nokia phone that plugs into a cable that can then connect to a PC. Last time I looked they cost £20+ though...

Do they not come with the phone with nokias? My ericsson came with a USB cable, that would probably be easiest for Donna. I wouldn't think that the photos would be lost when changing the SIM though - I change the SIM regularly and keep my photos. Again, it's a different phone though.

Cost's not so important -these are cat photos, anyway, nothing's too good for them.

Right. (In re: zed and others.) I think we've established that my photos and numbers are now on the phone, so that's OK. We also think my SIM card would work in Spain anyway, but it shouldn't matter. What we're not sure about is how I get the photos off the phone and onto the Net, in the fullness of time. I also still don't really know what "bluetooth" is, but it may not be important.....
