Mobile Apps

Great for that AoB at the end of a meeting....um, yes...

'Remember.....the force will be with you...always'

My second favourite mobile app ever, now that O2 have opened up the firewall, is MidpSSH. An SSH client for Java phones. Genius! Now I can reboot my server or trigger all kinds of evil without having to leave my bed.

Opera Mini and Google Maps is all I need for my Nokia OS phone (6300).

yup, because of OPera mini, I can see no real reason to upgrade my triusty nokie e65 :)

ah rather fabulous phone!

i really do think I've formed an unnatural relationship with this phone :)

Now this could be a bit of a find...

Soonr: It's 'cloud' type service, with 500mb of storage for free. You have to sign up via their iPhone app (from what I can tell), but otherwise think of it as automatic internet based backup. You tell the desktop software what folders to watch, and it syncs them up to their centralised storage, automatically, in background.

With the iPhone client, you can view various common file types - Excel, Word etc.

I gave it a whirl today and liked the way it just seemed to do it's stuff without me thinking about it. And a few minutes later, I could see the documents on my phone. It will do some kind of printer sharing too (although I've not tested that yet).

But the main thing I'm liking is simply the free backup. :)

Rolando is a great game, really nice use of the interface and very playable to boot.

How far have you got into it? Does it keep delivering?

(The reason I ask is that I got Field Runners, and went from totally hooked to totally disappointed. It ran out of steam really quickly for me, but it gets mega reviews.)

I'm liking it, its a good little game that gets hard quite quickly and one you do reach for from time to time. Defo worth the 6 quid.

Must have got to about the 7th or 8th level and I'm still liking it. The music is very cool too. Reminds me a lot of Lemmings for some reason.

free app, iHandy level seems to work well.

Another vote for Opera mini here.

Also this timetable thingy:

I'd also like to recommend the Nokia Maps application. One of the best things about it is that it allows you to view and search maps offline. This is very useful for looking up where you're going on the tube, and also when abroad and data charges are high. I have downloaded the whole of Europe onto my phone and have found it very useful when travelling. It's one of the main reasons (along with camera quality) I am not tempted by the iPhone because as I understand it no similar service is offered.

A free lightsaber app has appeared on the Android Market, along with a Star Trek Tricorder, that uses the inbuilt gizmos of the G1 to show you the local gravitational field strength and all sorts of other stuff, including magnetic field strength, geolocation data, wifi signals, phone mast info etc

My life is now complete  :D

I so want to be you. I've been looking really hard for something to check the level of, I've offered loads of people the capability, but no, nada. :(

I'm not giving up though, the time will come when I'll be a hero because I'll have a level/lightmeter and will save the day!

Just getting used to my ipod touch and have installed:
  • Things (GTD app, expensive but I think/hope, it's going to revolutionise my life along with the desktop app that I'm using in a trial, they sync over wifi)
  • Facebook
  • BBCReader
  • Google
  • ebay
  • MySpace
  • iCookLite
  • Night Stand (turns your iphone/ipod into a bedside clock)
  • iHandy Level (as previously mentioned)
  • BClassicLite (blocks game, y'know the one)
  • TiltSnake
  • WiFinder

All free apart from Things.

e2a: Baaaah! Forget about the Blocks Classic Lite, just played it and completed ten levels... and that's it, I've fallen victim to their cunning plan to entice me into buying the un-free version. *clicks uninstall*

I've been busy!

AeroSynth Free (music thing where you have to tap the notes out)
Amazing X-Ray FX (nice fake xray gimmick to fool gullible people)
AP Mobile News net (I need the newsfeeds 24/7)
Aqua Forest (smart tilt game that works by directing liquid around)
Audi A4 Driver (speaks for itself)
BBC Reader (need the BBC, although no wi-fi... no working)
Easy Writer (slightly bigger keys for big fingers, useful for drafting emails)
Fiat Lux (turns the phone into an expensive torch)
FlyCast Mobile Broadcast (international radio, some awesome dance stations)
Free RSS Reader (speaks for itself)
Free Translator (does loads of languages - brilliant!)
Free Spanish Tutor (learning Espanol y'see!)
iPint (for showing off at the pub)
iRail European Rail Timetables (very handy - I cannot find that myRailLite anywhere!!)
iTalk Recorder (useful dictating software, essential!)
Last.fm (always liked these lot)
MixMeister Scratch (for doing the wiki-wikis when bored)
News UK Lite
NewsDesk
NuAgeRadio (odd stations from around the world, seems to work well)
Public Radio Tuner (same as above)
Remote
Scroll Driver Lite (driving game)
Tap Tap Revenge (music game)
tvGuide (this is ace - never miss another programme!)
Virtual Zippo Lighter (again, showing off down the boozer)
WiFiTrak (this is a paid-for app, but it's vital for finding free wi-fi!)

I'm loving it so far, this iPhone lark. All those are just from the past 24 hours!

I've discovered the world's best mobile ap.

Often I've been stuck in the position where I've said to myself what would Mr T say right now. But with my poor memory I can't always recall his words of wisdom in times of need.

With iPity my problem is solved. Mr T speaks for me with a tap of the screen.

You crazy foo!

You know what's annoying? The fact that Apple won't let any 3rd party app access the music stored on the touch/iphone and therefore the complete lack of DJing software. The multitouch screen just cries out for it. You could send the Cue to the left channel and Mix to the right. I want that :(

That'd make for some fun games too...DJ Hero anyone?

Google have just launched Google sync, to sync google contacts and calendars. It basically mimics Exchange. So if your mobile supports syncing to via ActiveSync (plenty do, including the iPhone), then you're supported.

I had this functionality running via a 3rd party provider, but Google's own version has a few nicer touches.

Must-have if your contacts or calendar is in google. Totally seamless. You make a change at one end and it's automatically updated at the other, over the air. There's no 'sync' process you have to do yourself.

This is what I've got on my G1 (android) so far:

Shopsavvy - This is the app for the G1. Scan a barcode in a shop, it works out what the item is, then shows you prices in shops local to your current location and online. It's already saved me a few quid whilst out and about

Sounds like something I used to read in books on science about the future, when I was little. Excellent.

Anybody recommend any good WM6 apps?

So far I get a lot of use out of GRemote which acts as a nice bluetooth/USB air tilt mouse for when you just can't be arsed to go over to your computer.

GPS Tool is essential for getting the pissy Touch Diamond GPS to pick anything up.

Err, PIM backup for all the rom flashings I do.

And xda-developers.com for being lovely and making lots of roms :D

Are there licencing law issues over using someone else's music on your ap without permision? Regardless to whether or not the owner of the ap also own the music in it's original unaltered format.

No, it's just apple don't want competing music player applications on the iphone/ipod.
