Mixers for spirits that shouldn't work (but they do)

(dark) rum & grapefruit juice works surprisingly well. Discovered by accident when I had little else to drink.

I was introduced to rum in hot chocolate in Iceland... well tasty  tho' ideally I think you want like, danish rum, rather than stuff from anywhere hot.

Some of these combos you guys are mentioning sound nice/intriguing, some of them sound fucking awful (wine in the white russian in particular!)

Oo yeah! Salmiak vodka.

Get a bunch of scandinavian/dutch ammonia-flavoured salty liquorice sweets. Crush them up & whack them in a bottle of vodka, having sipped out enough vodka to make room for them.

Put bottle of vodka in the dishwasher on hot cycle (or if you're more patient, leave for a week or so, shaking it from time to time)... consume!

Dangerously tasty.

edit: tho' i dunno if a bunch of liquorice sweets count as a "mixer" really....

Cointreau and espresso 50/50 mix
Vodka and Red Kola
A pack of barley sugars dissolved in a bottle of vodka goes down a treat as well.

I bought some scrumpy tonight, 8% - 12% - each batch varies, from a farmshop - gonna have some of that with guinness if it's sweet n foul methinks.

Red wine and cola.
It sounds wrong but it's really nice.
But I don't drink red wine anymore, it makes me crazy!

I used to have a Portuguese mate who drank this. Is it a Portuguese thing, do you know, or are there pockets of red wine and cola mixing drinkers all over the place?

The most bizarre combo I ever served up was whiskey and orange juice. As if whiskey on its own isn't rank enough!

Vodka and silver Purdeys makes a refreshing tipple after an all night bender. Or you could just go for a Scottish friend's suggestion, the boil-e, which is an E in a mug of Bovril.

I've seen Spaniards doing this

He says it's the answer to all those early morning times when you really want to carry on but are just too wrong and broken from hours of abuse to continue.

Of course, I have no idea what he's talking about.

Well, I was introduced to it in Byron Bay by a German surfer...
I had heard it was a Spanish/Portugese thing mostly though.

Rubbish. Gin and Tonic is far too wet, foppish and predictable. Gin and bitter lemon all the way.

seconded, 'specially with a squeeze of lime in.

sambucca and grapefruit juice now, is proof i need to go shopping.:(
