Mitt Romney 2008 - Can a Mormon be president?

He won the White House? I thought he got selected by The Gipper and his dad's mates on the Supreme Court...but that of course would be an outrageously cynical thing to say...

Get back to Moscow pinko

:D:D:D

I remember reading a Nick Cohen op-ed piece in the Observer (yes i know, but it was Sunday) and getting REALLY enraged when he said that Bush won the 2000 election. I'd just finished re-reading the Bush Dyslexicon (which I recommend to any GOP watchers out there - it gets a bit ranty at the end, but the main text is really good) and I got really annoyed that even someone like Cohen seems to have swallowed the Rove-approved history of events in Florida...did I do anything like write to CIF tho? Did I fuck.

Romney might have some problems with evangelicals who believe Mormons are a sect comparable to the scientologists or christian scientists. Also secular Americans like myself are suspicious or Mormons in general and are prone to buy into the silly stereotypes like mutiple wives, having sex with fourteen year olds etc.. He does have his hurdles

mears, as I understand there are splinter groups of the Mormon church that do indeed practice polygyny in a highly abusive manner, up to and including 14 year old girls being married off to their uncles.

This isn't supported by the mainstream Mormon church, but the state of Utah which that church controls is noticeably lax in pursuing and prosecuting offenders in this sort of case. So, you're right this is probably an Achille's Heel for him.

Do you think 'merkins will go for another religious nut after bush messed up so badly though?. And the mormons are proper nuts.

They're also one of the fastest growing religions in the world. From what I've read they're cleaning up among new immigrant groups which see conversion to mormonism as their ticket to assimilation.

so, is he going to have a first lady, second lady, third lady, fourth lady etc?

can't we just ban this self=publicising fucktard like i've been suggesting from his first fucking post.

He'll have to overcome Jeb momentum first won't he? Or is Jeb gonna keep the Bush name out of the Whitehouse until America has forgotten his brother?

I don't know why he didn't run in the first place - he might be a Bush and a Republican but at least he's a relatively competent administrator...

Jeb Bush is not running for Pres

Yes, some real freaks have splintered off from the Mormon church. He will have to battle some negative stereotypes.

Would you agree that the failure to prosecute those freaks whose churches sanction organised child abuse indicates that they have not splintered off entirely?

does it really matter what particular cult of christianity you belong to in the long run?

1. I suppose it does for Christians
2. As far as I know Mormons are not considered Christians among Christians.
3. I am not particularly informed but I had in the past some conversations with Mormons. I can't say that they came across as Christians. They came across as Mormons.

salaam.

Of course it is unfair to attack Romney because of his religious convictions and the misdeeds of those radicals who comprise the Mormon religion.

All Mormons are not bad becasue there are a few bad apples like Jeffs just as all Sunni Muslims are not all bad becasue 19 of them were engaged in killing thousands of innocents.

I am sure you all agree.

mears, do you see anyone who is not
white,
male, heterosexual-married-with-children-Evangelical-Christian

standing a chance to get the presidency in the USA these days?

salaam.

Would you vote a guy in as president of your country who belived this:

According to Latter-day Saint theology, the term Mormon also refers to a prophet who lived in the Americas in the 4th century A.D. He was called by God to abridge and compile the records of his people and their dealings with God into a single book. This book is now known as the Book of Mormon. After Mormon's death, his son Moroni witnessed the complete destruction of his people and buried the record compiled by his father in a hill in what is now upstate New York. This same Moroni, more than 1400 years later, was sent by God as a messenger to Smith who went to the place where the record was buried, and with a great deal of help from God, Joseph Smith translated the record into English.

Serious question.
