Minimal techno - do you get it?

You ever go record shopping @ Choci's Choons when it was in Soho (it was somewhere before St Anne's Court, but that's the location I remember most)? Some wicked rekkids on sale.

Minimal techno, like Philip Glass and lots of other minimal classical music, can be mindbendingly tedious if it's done poorly but takes you somewhere COMPLETELY different in your head when done well. Never what I've regarded as being party music tho - certainly not the stuff I've heard recently, and in fairness stuff like Spastik wasn't either (plus of course some of it's scary as hell)...but Mills, UR and the early to mid-90s rocked it...and don't forget the Aphex Twin or Warp either...

I used to go to Choci's Chewns, I even have a Choci's Chewn's record bag. I'd not call him minimal though! Very acidy/trancey IMO.

Hmm, I'd say that Mills, certainly a large chunk of the UR catalogue are certainly minimal, as are tracks like 'Aphex Airlines', the original and remix of Icct Hedral...I'd also argue that much of the 'bleeps' stuff from 89-91 was also minimal.

Choci's Chewns was

Some of the stuff was very minimal in the original sense of not having very many different things going on - I'm thinking of tunes like Mono Madness etc. Maybe it's not quite in the genre called 'minimal' though. Well in fact it's not, it's definitely hard acid techno. Which is fine by me :)

it's a wierd one - on the one hand it's rocking peoples worlds (ibiza) ok in the main they probably don't know any better (but some of them must do!) and on the other hand it leaves (you me anyone else?) cold...

I don't accept the ket argument - most of these parties are pretty clean really...
I just think it's an emporers new clothes thing......

oh thx, I'm also getting DJ Pierre @ Hard Times 1993
That was the night I queued with my brother for an hour, only to be turned away for being too casual. Fucking poncey Leeds clubbed - I was the only person in the ponced-up queue who even knew who he was

Haha, my sister used to go there and everywhere when I was a nipper, so now she has a catalogue of amazing clubbing experiences to rub my face in.

Hey Orangutan or whoever, get the Pierre set it's got some fantastic sections, I like the more generic diva house parts too. Distinctly non-minimal!

No, not for me.

Lost was shite the last time I went- Poor music, poor crowd, hardly any effort made with decor, 4 quid a can of stella at the bar, horrible security, got forced to put my camera in the cloakroom, and all for a bargain 20 quid!

Lost does suck big time now, mostly due to the venue owner who's a right c*nt apparently....

Genre in "some good some bad" shocker! :D

I'm really enjoying "the new minimal" for want of a better term.
Dominik Eulberg, Ricardo Villalobos, Michael Mayer etc. are really doing it for me at the moment.
Eulberg was a bit shit at Primavera though, cementing for me the idea that it's really sunrise music rather than all night stomping music.
It is also nice arc-white maximally complex stuff to get your head really deep into when you're chilling, and yeah it works with K, but it works fine without- I don't think of myself as a musical intellectual (see my many many rapturous experiences listening to gabba/breakcore/hardcore!!) but concentrating gently on a really carefully-wrought tune that's still got a pushing bassline will always entertain me.
IMO It's definitely superior to trance for have a jiggle at 8am, and I have enjoyed "raving" to it on occasion. Thing is, I *really* like electro as well, and I don't really think of minimal techno as techno it's more like techy electro in my book. And some of the finest stuff does have echoes of Herbert and his micro-house cleverness, which just serves to underline that this shit isn't at all simple.
Saw Hawtin and Marc Houle on Friday night at Glade and they fucking rocked it out properly. Made me dance, didn't get bored. And I have a fairly short attention span, so I'm not sure what all the h8 is about. I think Hawtin got boring in the early 00s but has found himself again. Could just be me that thinks this.

I reckon if I was a surgeon carrying out an alien autopsy I'd have a bit of minimal going on to keep me company as it does seem a sound suited to that Roswell was it/wasn't it a real alien autopsy film - but as i'm not then I am still struggling..
..but will check out some of the names mentioned on this thread anyway..
..re the decor - yes it was shite this time, a row of blue lights and a row of red lights with a fog machine and that was it..having been to a Lost with Mills playing when I am pretty sure there was more decor I wonder if it was all down to the whole "let's keep it really minimal" sense of the night:confused:
Everything minimal except the prices ;)

I think, basically, there isn't anything to "get".
It's probably just not the best thing to go out and have a raging time to :D
Unless you really like concentrating!
It reminds me of the whole "you can't dance to dubstep" things. Of course you can! You can dance to white noise if you're so inclined. But you might not want to....

Apparently they were charging £1 to get a band so you could go out and smoke on Saturday!
(SE1, the venue, not Lost, the promoters, of course)

I went to watch some bands in Cambridge the other night and they were doing the same thing. Pretty fucked up! Maybe it's an extreme measure to get people to stop smoking?

Oh yes I remember seeing a sign saying "smoking bands for sale" now:eek:
If you were sly and didn't mind being deep in the crowd you didn't need to go anywhere for a nicotine hit..
SE1 has >ahem< questionable management then??
Real shame as it has so much potential:rolleyes:

It might get me starting to smoke - that was my first time in a club since the smoking ban, as a non-smoker there were times when I wished for a smoker to light up and disguise some of the odours that were flying about..might carry a cigarette or two as a repellent from now on:eek: ;)
