Mini-Sainsburies

Two things noteably missing from Brixton: decent CD/Record/Computer Games shop and any sort of retailer of electronics good. Again I suspect running such an emporium would be too much hassle with all the stock that would get lifted.

That was one of the reasons why Virgin shut. Loads of gear went, according to the assistants.
:(

I buy as much as I can from the portugese deli on Atlantic Road, I fucking love it in there. The real italian pasta is amazing and actually cheaper than Sainsbury's mass produced crap. Plus they do proper sized spring onions and really nice bread. The only downside is they close for the whole of August and their green olives are a bit salty. And they inexplicably don't sell mushrooms. But they do sell great feta.

God I'm hungry.

Pig is working in Brixton today and he's managed to track down the butchers which sells the lovely pork pies. I will be stuffing the lot tonight!

Brixton has about a million of those. Evergreen is great and really friendly. The organic shop in Brixton Village is pretty good, and Danny's and Brixton Foods OK for most things.

Excuse my ignorance but where exactly is Brixton Village?

It's a pain in the arse, but part of their unique charm, imho. It comes as a shock every year, even though they've had a sign up for ages and it happens, er, every year! And there's that whole bitter-sweet thing of knowing when they open again, summer is nearly over...

They were in the Financial Times earlier in the year -- a whole page article called "My Favourite Shop".

umm still not sure where you mean... covered market? the one just past the Dogstar on coldharbour?

Yes. I think the Organic shop is actually in Market Row though -- the one accessed either from Electric Lane/Coldharbour Lane/Atlantic Road.

There's a great pound shop in there as well which sells any cleaning product you could wish for.

I like the name Brixton Village - dunno why some people are so down on it

I really like it but it's not really a village pond with ducks on it and people playing cricket is it? The name just confuses people. Granville arcade at least had the virtue of being under a block of flats called Granville court.

No, but village doesn't always mean that does it? It also means the shopping area of a suburb - which is exactly what it is.
